Friends of the Earth, housing and development campaigner, Mr Gary Marshall, recently visited the Launceston site of the proposed development for 159 houses and the Kensey Walley relief road. He says he will be objecting to the application on behalf of Friends of the Earth.

The importance of Launceston as a railway centre was stressed at last week’s meeting of Launceston Rural Council. It was contained in a letter from the Railway Invigoration Society dealing with the proposed closure of the Okehampton-Halwill-Bude and the Halwill-Launceston-Wadebridge railway line.

Among schemes for road improvements being submitted by Cornwall County Council to the Ministry of Transport for the next financial year are an £8,000 project at Moss Side, Callington, and one costing £7,200 at Shernick Gate, on the Stratton-Holsworthy road.

Clergy, churchwardens, parochial church councillors and parishioners for the Deaneries of Stratton and Trigg Major, gathered at St Mary Magdalene Church, Launceston, on Thursday for the visitation of the Bishop of Truro, (The Right Rev E R Morgan).

A “phenomenal success” was achieved at the Bath and West Show at Exeter where Messrs Cecil Brent and Son, of Clampitts Farm, Callington, swept the board in the Devon cattle classes to take the championship trophies.

Launceston’s newest school the County Secondary School at Pennygillam, opened at the commencement of the spring term last January. However, it was not officially opened until last Saturday when the ceremony was performed at Newquay, some 45 miles away. Miss Florence Horsburgh, Minister of Education, did visit the school the previous day and also visited schools at Lezant and Lawhitton.

Stratton Farmers’ Union are seeking a change in the day of Stratton Market, from Tuesday, probably to Saturday, to avoid clashing with Launceston.

Lalage Maxwell Fyfe, the 17-year-old daughter of the Solicitor General (Sir David Maxwell Fyfe) was killed when cycling towards Hartland Quay on Monday, she and her machine went right over the cliff, apparently having some down the hill too fast. The girl was a student under Miss Ellison at Hartland Abbey.

Miss Tregoning has resigned as honorary secretary of the Lawhitton, Lezant and South Petherwin Nursing Association, a position which she has held since its foundation 33 years ago. Her successor is Mrs C P Triplett, of Lezant Rectory. The district nurse (Nurse Harris), who has resigned after 12 years, is to be succeeded by Nurse Jones.

Mr Wellington has retired after being postmaster at Lifton for 26 years and he and his wife have been presented with a cheque for £64, subscribed by 150 people in the village and district.

“The Phantom Light”, a British film, is being shot in North Cornwall, and crowds of local people have been going to Boscastle and Port Isaac to see filming in action. The stars are Gordon Harker, Binnie Hale, Donald Calthorp and Ian Hunter.

When Holsworthy Fire Brigade was called to a fire at New England, Dunsland Cross, a shortage of water resulted in the total destruction of the building. The occupants, Mr and Mrs Knight, were unable to save any of their possessions.

Winning the hurdle and bank race for the third year in succession, Mr Luxton’s horse Jinglar (Bratton Clovelly) secured the Mounce Cup outright at Lifton annual sports on Thursday week.

The new vicar of Poughill, Rev Raymond Whitewell, was inducted at St Olaf’s Church, on Thursday. He comes from Leeds.

The 26th annual exhibition of Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Association was held yesterday at Bude. Entries were hoses 240; cattle 114; sheep 29; pigs 52; butter and cream 18; stands 11; total 464. The president is Mr Alfred Banbury, JP, CC, of Howards, Stratton.

Stoke Climsland Football Club who have won the Liskeard and District Shield and the Launceston League and KO Cups, have only been beaten twice this season. The players are: S Pridham, W Geake, Rev L M Andrews, A Geake, I Lucas, C Skelly, T Rundle, A Dingle, J Langford (capt), F Heath, H Mill, P Cowling and S White. Mr W Joll is honorary secretary.

The many listeners in at Holsworthy were very interested on Sunday in the broadcast from Aberdeen of Sebastian Wesley’s “Holsworthy’s Church Bells” composed at Penrose House, the residence of the late Dr T L Ash.
