COMMUNITIES came together last week to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

On June 6, residents of Launceston showed solidarity as they joined the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion in the town’s square at 11am to reflect and remember the events of 80 year’s prior.

Later in the week, on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9, the Legion supported the Fox and Grapes in Lifton who hosted a special 80th anniversary D-Day commemoration weekend.

The occasion included a variety of events which members of the public could get involved with. From military and classic vehicle displays, ’living history’ displays, military charity stands, evening entertainment with FIVE STAR SWING, and a traditional remembrance ceremony it was a fitting occasion.

The evening of June 8 saw residents enjoy ‘Hits from the Blitz’, offering the iconic sound of the 1940’s, with the songs of Glenn Miller, Vera Lynne and many more.

As well as this, residents received a special visit from a historic craft, as an RAF Rescue Helicopter performed a fly past.

If this wasn’t enough, residents were also given the unique opportunity to see one of these flying machines up close, as the helicopter landed nearby to give locals a closer look — with some even getting the chance to sit inside.
