A woman from Holsworthy who sought to go from couch to 155 kilometres during January to raise money for a good cause celebrated two successes after her fundraising push.
Not only was Hollie Prowse’s mission in aid of Mardon Neuro rehab centre a success, it also came with several thousand pounds worth of fundraising.
Ms Prowse initially sought to raise £1,550 for the centre, representing £10 for every one of the 155 km she planned to undertake throughout January.
However, such was the best wishes for her to succeed, she managed to raise £6,805 from 164 donors.
The fundraising came around managing a full-time job, life challenges and everything the inclement January weather could throw at her.
Ms Prowse aimed to raise the money to thank the centre for their help in her mother’s rehabilitation after having a seizure amid an undiagnosed benign brain tumour two years ago. She has made significant progress to this date, leading to Hollie setting herself the challenge to give back to the rehab centre.
She said after completing her challenge: “Before January I was very much not a runner, I've played netball for years but there's a big difference between the intensity of a netball match and endurance for steady state running!
“I started couch to 5km back in October, my first 5km run was on the November 15 so it was a real challenge to go from nothing to running 5km every day in January! The toughest part was the mental challenge to fit the run in around full-time work, general life and trying to dodge the storms we had throughout the month.
“It's true what they say about your mind giving up before your body does but keeping my head on the reason why I was running and with all the donations coming through really helped.”
