NHS Devon has responded to local anger after a pharmacy was left unable to dispense medication for over two weeks.

Jhoots Pharmacy in Holsworthy was criticised after leaving the town’s residents without a pharmacist for over two weeks in addition to claims of not responding to staff enquiries about the issue as they were left unable to give medication for legal reasons.

In a response to those criticisms, NHS Devon defended Jhoots Pharmacy, saying they had ‘made every effort’ to arrange short notice cover during the period of absence.

A spokesperson for NHS Devon said: “NHS Devon maintains regular contact with Jhoots and all other local pharmacy contractors to understand the challenges they face. On this occasion the regular Locum Pharmacist based at Holsworthy needed to take some unexpected leave. Every effort was made by Jhoots to arrange short notice cover but unfortunately this has not been successful.”

Adding that the issue is now resolved with the regular locum pharmacist returning from leave, the spokesperson added: “We understand that this may have been difficult for those who have had difficulty accessing their prescriptions, and we are grateful to the local community for their patience in the matter. We will continue to work with Jhoots to ensure there is a stable and reliable service at Holsworthy going forward.”
