LIKE many towns and cities across the country, Bude and Stratton came together last week to remember those who gave their lives during the D-Day landings 80 years ago.

Residents joined Bude’s Royal British Legion for a service at the town’s war memorial on Shalder Hill.

During the occasion and as a mark of respect, the Union Flag was flown on Shalder Hill’s flagpole.

As well as this, residents and visitors to the area were reminded of the brave actions of 80 years ago, as the town paid tribute by illuminating, the war memorial, The Castle and the Storm Tower during the evening.

Mayor of Bude-Stratton, Cllr Steven Haynes said: “Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a day of profound bravery and sacrifice that changed the course of history. As we reflect on the courage of those who stood for freedom, Bude-Stratton Town Council will honour their memory by lighting the Storm Tower and The Castle and flying the Union Flag at Shalder Hill.

“Join us in remembering the valour and spirit of all those who served on this historic day. Let us never forget the cost of peace and the strength of unity.”
