WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE

Penzance Seconds 2 Bude 3

THE visitors’ long trip ended with reward as a second half comeback saw them win 3-2 at Penzance.

The Seasiders were relegated from Division Two South last term, but headed down the A30 with two new recruits in EJ Biggadike and Caroline Hockridge.

In fine early autumn sunshine, Bude started well but Penzance soon gained possession and launched some high-attacking plays which were met by great saves by Jo Timmins and a fortunate block by Clare Westaway on the goal line.

Fortunately, Bude fought back, with Izzy Wickett making a strategic pass to Izzy Sobey, who drove to the baseline and set up EV Varcoe to put them in front.

Despite holding the lead for most of the first half, Penzance managed to equalise, and this was shortly followed by a short corner at the very end of the half where the hosts scored a penalty flick that put them into a 2-1 lead at the break.

Bude returned for the second half with determination and composure, knowing the victory was within reach.

Impressive short passes between Phoebe Gannon and EJ showcased Bude's teamwork, yet Penzance's swift break put the visitors on the defensive once more.

But after holding firm, the Seasiders regained possession and Lottie Davies was able to distribute the ball back up the pitch leading to a series of passes culminating in Naomi Hatcher’s skilful goal which was flicked over the keeper for 2-2.

As the game neared its end, Bude relentlessly pursued victory, with EJ setting up Phoebe for a shot that was saved, only for Briony Varcoe to capitalise on the rebound with a finish from a tight angle.

Bude will aim to make it six points from a possible six on Saturday when they welcome Plymouth Lions Thirds (12.30pm).
