ONE of Launceston’s bus operators has said that it is working with the relevant bodies to reopen one of the town’s key bus stops.
Earlier this week, Go Cornwall Bus announced that it would no longer be serving the bus stop at the town’s Tesco supermarket.
Users of the transport were met with a message from the provider stating that the 78, 78A, 97, 220, 223, 371, 425, and 426, would no longer be using the stop.
The provider stated that this was for safety reasons.
A spokesperson from Go Cornwall Bus explained: “The issue is that there is a new, very well used parcel drop off/pick up locker unit been installed right next to the bus bay outside the store. The bus bay is being used by delivery vans and customers cars who are using the facility.
Now, the organisation has said that though this stop is not currently being used, other nearby stops are still serving travellers, and that the situation is ‘under review’ with Tesco to resolve the issue.
A spokesperson told the Post: “The buses are out of the bus stop within Tesco car park but are still serving the stops next to Tesco on Tavistock Road, we have not stopped serving Tesco in Launceston.
“As you can appreciate when you are operating large vehicles in a busy area both with cars and pedestrians' safety is paramount. The situation remains under review with Tesco with some suggestions to make operation safer having been put forward to them, these need to be reviewed and approved by their company's head office.
“Until it is deemed safe for buses to return to operating in the car park they will remain out, but I stress again we have not stopped serving Tesco in Launceston bus stops on the main roads are still being served as normal. “
