THE days might be shorter and the hours in the dark might be earlier and longer as autumn prepares to make way for winter, but one of the biggest events in Holsworthy’s social calendar is set to break the night with colour.
Holsworthy Carnival is set to hit the streets of the town on Saturday, November 16, with the usual distinctive array of colourful, distinctive floats and displays on parade as the town gets together for a level of jollification and family friendly fun that we all know Holsworthy is among the best at perfecting.
Amongst the usual fares are a few changes and we’ve got all you need to know.
Road Closures
Between 5.30pm and 10pm: River Tamar Way
Between 6pm and 10pm: Dobles Lane, Quagmire Lane, North Road (A388), Fore Street (A388), Bodmin Street, Croft Road, Victoria Street, Victoria Hill, Western Road, Sanders Lane, Waterloo Road.
Between 6pm and 11.59pm: The Square, Holsworthy.
Diversions for the road closures on A388 and A3072 will be signposted.
Carnival Royalty
This year’s royalty display will see a slight difference, as in a deviation from tradition, the prince and princess will share a float in the carnival parade.
It has been confirmed that five-year-old Piper Caldecott, a student at Holsworthy Primary School has been designated as this year’s Carnival Princess, while Albie Mark-James Bird, six, who attends Bradworthy Primary Academy will take the honour of being the town’s Carnival Prince.
Two new categories
There will be a “Peoples' Choice” award. As the name says, this is voted for by the people who come to watch the Carnival. There will be a form in the Carnival programme – and all you have to do is write down who you thought was the best entry on the night. It could be a float, it could be a walking entry, or it could be a tractor. The choice is yours. Once you have filled in the form – please drop it off at the Carnival merchandise stall in The Square. Everybody who does will get a free glow stick.
The second new award is for the "Most Resourceful Float" – which will be chosen by the judges. This will not necessarily be awarded to the best float – but to a float that has made a real statement and achieved a great design, ideally using upcycled materials, and without spending a fortune.
After carnival party
Music for the Carnival after party, held at the Memorial Hall will feature music from the Wrecklords, a DJ set from DJ Pasty and a main bar, shot bar and barbeque, starting at 9pm.
Tickets are available from the ticketebo website, searching Holsworthy After Carnival party.
