A HISTORIC painting has been uncovered of one of Launceston’s most iconic writers.

Lawrence House Museum’s Pop Up in the Merchant’s House at 11a High Street, Launceston, received a special visit this week when a previously unseen portrait of Charles Causley was delivered by Ben Simmons.

Ben is the great nephew of Stan Simmons, a good friend of Causley’s when they met during the war. Following their meeting, they became lifelong friends, with Stan even retiring in South Petherwin.

Last week, Ben visited the Lawrence House Museum’s Pop Up to deliver several paintings created by his great uncle, including one of Causley himself.

Malcolm Wright, who has been involved in the Causley Trust, as well as Lawrence House Museum for many years, was in attendance to receive the donation.

Along with the portrait, a number of paintings and sketches of cats were donated. There is some mystery as to whether these are of Causley’s or Simmons’ pet cats.

Volunteers at the pop up were keen to get a glance at these newly discovered creations.

Having received the donation, the pop up will now remain closed for a month to allow for a change of decor, displaying an exhibition focusing on ‘toys’.
