NORTH Hill’s Shirley Luckhurst was part of the Cornwall Vets team that headed up to Kintbury in Berkshire over the weekend of January 25 and 26 for the second round of matches in their season.

Having won two of their three outings in their season opener at Frome on Saturday, December 14, the quartet of Dave Plumb, Mark Cock, Ritchie Bartlett and Luckhurst defeated Worcestershire 6-4, Berkshire 6-4, Gwent Seconds 8-2 and Gwent 6-4.

While the three men in the side all contributed well, Luckhurst was arguably the star performer of the day as not only did she record victories in all four of her singles, she was also unbeaten in four doubles matches with both Plumb and Bartlett.

The Cornwall Junior County Closed Championships also took place on Saturday, January 18 at the Cornwall Table Tennis Centre in St Austell, which included four entrants from Bude.

Aleks Worth, Louis Konowalik, Arthur Rosen-Mitchell and Jensen Grills all played with Konowalik reaching the Cadet Singles semi-final where he was beaten by runner-up Fynn Fleming.

Worth and Konowalik both reached the last eight in the Junior Singles where Worth beat Flynn Fleming and Konowalik lost to Jaydon Lehane.

Worth’s semi-final opponent was Cape Cornwall’s Thomas Trembath.

After edging a close second set 12-10, Worth was level at 1-1, however Trembath ran off the next two sets 11-4 and 11-7 to set up a final with Alfie Tangye who proved too strong.

Worth again reached the last four of the Under 21 Singles having beaten Jaydon Lehane in the quarter-final, but was soundly beaten by Tangye who defeated Cornwall ladies’ champion Erin Bryant in the final.

Worth and Konowalik also teamed in the Junior Knockout and Junior Doubles competitions, but lost in the semi-finals in both to Erin Bryant and Sophie Hooley and Alfie Tangye and Jaydon Lehane respectively.
