CORNWALL COLTS SHIELD FINAL AT HAYLE RFC (SATURDAY)
Bude 36 St Austell 12
THE Cornwall Colts Shield final saw an impressive display from both Bude and St Austell with the Seasiders ultimately securing a decisive victory in challenging weather conditions.
Bude started the match with significant early pressure and prop Sam Vickery soon powered over the try line from a penalty, with Alfie Sealey adding the conversion (7-0).
Bude were on top but suffered a real blow when Vickery sustained a suspected broken leg, but from the resulting scrum, Sealey ran a great line to dive behind the posts. He then added the extras for 14-0.
St Austell tried to mount pressure close to the line, but an impressive counter-ruck from Jaylen Hopgood disrupted their advance.
Bude regained possession, and Jack Cooper's interception in his own half led to a swift run under the posts. Though the conversion was missed, Bude were 19-0 to the good.
The rest of the half became scrappy before the Saints managed a 50-22 kick position, using it to score their first try, reducing the deficit to 19-7 at the break.
Bude extended their lead early in the second half. Sealey executed an audacious chip before collecting his own kick and running under the posts for another converted try.
Bude’s bench was impressive with Charlie Firman, Archie Jollow and Mitch Sibley all making an impact, and they got their fifth try from a scrum with replacement Jack Ludwell dotting it down. Sealey, who later added a penalty to round off the scoring, impressively converted from the touchline.
