Cornwall Cricket League Division Five and Six East round-up – Saturday, August 17

BUDE Seconds closed in on second-placed Wadebridge Thirds on Saturday following a routine 133-run success over their Saltash St Stephens counterparts at Crooklets.

As often is the case, it was Bude’s top order that did the bulk of the work as they made 225-4.

Openers Michael Taylor (63) and Jack Miles (61) put on 124 before Mike Ellis’ unbeaten 35 secured maximum batting points.

In reply, the visitors mustered just 92 all out as Nick Sainsbury (4-24) and Mike Taylor (3-21) shared seven wickets.

The Seasiders are 12 points behind Wadebridge who lost at leaders Gorran, while third-placed Holsworthy Seconds also lost.

They welcomed mid-table Werrington Fourths who made a competitive 197-7 at Stanhope Park.

Opener Nigel Dennis top-scored with 40 although the home bowlers sent down the same number of extras, while there were useful contributions from Dan Inman (26), Antony Sachs (24), Ben Sonley (20no) and Tyler Westlake (18no).

Lewis Chidley was the pick of the Trees attack with 2-21 from his nine overs.

Openers Lyndon Piper and Ben Hutchings added 33, but they soon slipped to 95-7 with man of the match Sonley doing much of the damage with his off-spin.

He took 3-38 from his ten overs, and although Holsworthy eventually reached 133 before being bowled out thanks to an unbeaten 30 from Dan Marks, 19 points headed back down the A388.

Teenagers Tyler Jasper (3-42) and Joe Gent (3-19) shared six wickets.

Gunnislake’s batting struggles continued as they lost by five wickets to Bugle.

Despite Stephen Lees’ 30 and 22 from Russ Holloway, it took a partnership of 32 between Jamie Watts (9) and Dean Organ (19no) to give them a sniff from 100-9.

But Bugle took their time and got home with five wickets and 19 balls to spare despite 2-18 from Holloway.

South Petherwin Seconds eased to a six-wicket victory over visiting Roche Thirds.

A fine bowling display kept the visitors to just 156-8 as Caleb Forsyth claimed 3-25, while there were braces from Brian Baker (2-21) and Emma Barnes (2-30).

The chase was dominated by opener Richard Watson’s unbeaten 79, and he found useful support from skipper Ollie Peterson before a couple of late wickets.

In Division Six East, Luckett Seconds continue to cruise towards the title as they thrashed their Boconnoc counterparts by eight wickets at Deer Park.

The home side were going well at 50-1 with Darren Piper (27) set, but when he was bowled either side of Steve Brown’s brace, Boconnoc subsided to 99 all out despite John Hosking’s 25.

Martin Budden ran through the tail on his way to figures of 5-18 from 6.1 overs.

Martin Budge and Richard Seeley made 17 apiece before departing, but it was Mike Clements’ unbeaten 48 from just 27 balls that got them home.

Luckett need a maximum of five points from their final two games to take the title.

Tintagel Seconds know an 18-point victory over Lanhydrock Thirds on Saturday will be enough to guarantee the runners-up spot ahead of their St Neot counterparts.

David Lane’s side visited Newquay Fourths and ran out seven-wicket winners.

Lane took 4-41 as the home side made 168-9, before forties from Richard Pethick (40) and Simon Harrison (46) laid the platform.

St Neot picked up just 18 points as they won by 66 runs at Launceston Thirds.

Ranveer Shoker took 5-62 as St Neot racked up a massive 270-6, but Launceston reached a respectable 204-7 in response as Adil Raza (87) and Kevin Worth (73) smacked ten sixes between them.
