Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, June 22

HOLSWORTHY produced their best performance of the season so far as they surprised previous table-toppers St Austell Seconds at Wheal Eliza.

The Trees headed down the A30 looking to build on their victory over Ladock and solid partnerships all the way through helped them post a competitive 205-5.

Opener Jack Greening made 31, Aiden Gerry returned to form with 32, and South African Herschelle Poggenpoel scored 59 from 64 balls.

The Saints would have backed themselves at halfway, but were undone by a typical Holsworthy display in the field.

Key man Hugh Parkinson was run out early on by Brendan Harris, and although youngster Ben Sleeman made 40, wickets tumbled as they slipped to 127-6 and eventually 164 all out.

Five bowlers took a wicket although it was Poggenpoel’s 4-24 that proved decisive.

Werrington went top of the table as a result as they fought back from a poor start to win at struggling Lanhydrock.

They slipped to 79-8 which included 3-36 from David Harland, but skipper Jason Seldon dug in for a fine 54, and with excellent support from Ian Searle (19) and Nick Oldaker (17no), they got up to 179 all out.

Lanhydrock were far from full strength and against a potent attack never looked like challenging the total as they were dismissed for 115 in the 42nd over.

Ryan Pooley claimed 3-15 while there were braces for Nick Oldaker (2-36), Ian Worsnip (2-11) and Leo McDonnell, the latter conceding just six runs from his nine-over allocation.

Bude kept up their good form with a 25-run victory at struggling Menheniot-Looe.

The Seasiders racked up a healthy 265-5 at Fourgates which included a run-a-ball 93 from James Sharman.

The all-rounder smashed ten fours and six sixes.

Skipper Warren Rumble kept up the good work with 85 (88 balls, six fours, six sixes) before Andrew De Rosa added 23 not out at the end.

Menheniot were missing a number of key players but put up a valiant fight after slipping to 27-3.

Aussie Lachlan Osborne shared stands of 106 with Tom Harris and 61 with Ross Ripley before he went at 194-5.

Once he went any chance of a superb comeback were over as Bude’s own Aussie Brett Hunter finished with 4-47 from nine overs, while James Turner took 2-41 including the big wicket of Osborne.

South Petherwin returned to winning ways with a dominant victory at bottom side Tintagel.

Petherwin got off to a good start through Mike Bolt (63) and Billy Martin (26) before Gyles Reynolds got the Knights back in the game.

But quickfire half centuries from captain Jacob Masters and Adrian Clements kept the runs coming as they posted 259-9 from their 45 overs.

Reynolds was comfortably the pick with 3-34 from his nine.

Tintagel’s reply never really got started although West Indian Akobe Earle batted through for his 68.

Opener Jordan Blanchard made 21 and Jordan Burnard 31, but Clements’ brilliant all-round day continued as his left-arm spin took 4-33.

Masters (3-55) and debutant James Weeks (2-32) also chipped in.

Callington Seconds were 32-run winners at St Blazey.

Four visiting batsmen – Nick Parker (30), Blake Tancock (34), James Moon (37) and Jim Shorten all reached 30 as they set the hosts 238 to win.

St Blazey’s impressive top three were all out with 58 on the board, and although there were forties from Dan Kendall and Andrew Thomas, Cally’s bowlers kept taking wickets, five of which fell to opening bowlers Ben Alford (2-31) and Jim Shorten (3-38).

St Minver enjoyed a remarkable nine-wicket victory at Ladock as they took ten home wickets for just 37 runs.

At 54-0 with Alex Ridd going well on 38, things looked ominious.

However, Rob Hawken took 4-17 and latterly Dean Jeffery 3-0 from 3.2 overs as a strong home side on paper folded for just 91.

Antony Ash then smashed an unbeaten 55 in the reply as Archie Edwards (21) was the only wicket to fall.
