ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

Werrington v Truro

SAM Hockin took 5-53 as Werrington moved 21 points clear of bottom side Camborne with a seven-wicket victory over Truro.

After losing the toss, visiting openers Dan Phillips and Harry Phillips put on 20 before the former was caught at gully by Ryan Pooley off Hockin via an inside edge onto pad.

Skipper Charlie Kent was castled three balls later by the same bowler for a duck, and although former Pakistani international Amir Yamin put on 30 with Phillips, Yamin was caught at mid-on by Jordan Duke for 11 trying to hit Hockin over the top.

Wickets then tumbled.

Harry Phillips (24) was caught behind by Lawson off Dan Barnard (1-35) before Hockin bowled Adam Price for four and had Conway Gilbert well caught at second slip by Pooley.

Ted Phillips played some nice shots in a partnership with Neil Ivamy, before the veteran spinner looked to attack Mark Taskis (2-28) and got a leading edge to Mark Gribble at cover.

Phillips got to 31 which included four fours and a six, but he holed out to Gribble at long-on to give Taskis his second.

At 109-8 Werrington would have been hoping for a chase of less than 125, but Freddie Bose (33) and Cornwall Under 13s player Jack Ivamy had other ideas.

They took their time but still put on 54 before Ivamy, who made 18 from 52 balls, tried to hit Adam Hodgson over the top and was caught by Duke.

Bose’s 69-ball stay was ended soon after when he picked out Thulina Dilshan at short mid-wicket, but they at least were up to a competitive score.

Werrington had to see off the pace threat of Yamin and Gilbert, and although Sam Hockin edged Yamin behind to Charlie Kent for ten, skipper Nick Lawson and Hodgson did exactly that.

Lawson (21) even plonked a Conway Gilbert free-hit over the tree, before he was bowled by the left-arm spin of Price trying a paddle sweep (62-2).

With 105 to win, Hodgson was joined by Dilshan.

The Sri Lankan struck six fours in his 44, which included two through the covers off Neil Ivamy.

He eventually departed when he top-edged a pull shot off Premier League debutant Billy Channell, but Gribble joined Hodgson to finish the contest.

Hodgson’s 112-ball knock contained seven fours as he finished on 54, while Gribble was 29 not out from 24 balls.

Reflecting on the game, Werrington skipper Nick Lawson said: “It was another good win after beating Helston last time out, and although they were somewhat depleted, we did what we had to do.

“Sam (Hockin) and Barny were solid up front again, and Sam got his rewards, but when they were 109-8 we should have finished the innings off quicker.

“But that said I’d probably have taken 166 at the start of the day, and the batsmen knocked it off comfortably, so it was a good all-round day for us.”

Werrington have an important clash at improving St Just this weekend.

Lawson said: “Saturday is a big game for us down at St Just who have come into some form in the last couple of weeks with wins over St Austell and Wadebridge, and we haven’t had a good record down there in recent years.

“But although they still have some dangerous players, I’m confident that if we put in another decent performance we can come away with another win.

“Every game for us at this stage of the season is important for us, but we know two or three more victories will see us climb the ladder!”
