WERRINGTON Under 15s have enjoyed a fantastic season in winning both the West Devon League and West Devon League Knockout Cup.

The only game they lost in 2024 was to Redruth in the Cornwall Cup final. In total they played 16 games, winning 15 and losing one.

The team were undefeated in the West Devon League and beat Plymouth in the Devon Knockout Cup final by 16 runs in a low scoring game at Yelverton.

Werrington made 96-7 from their 20 overs with Sam Smeeth (26) and Tyler May (22) passing 20, before the city club were held to 80-9.

Thomas Petherick (3-12) and Sam Uglow (2-11) shared five wickets.

The team, which is coached by Ben Smeeth and Rob May, has a real mixture of ages with players as young as 12 making real contributions to the team’s success. Grace Kirby, who plays for Cornwall Under 15 girls, has also been a regular in the team making a real impact, particularly with her bowling.

Reflecting on the season, Ben Smeeth said: “I’m absolutely delighted with how the season has gone. Our expectation before the season started was to compete in the league and have a good cup run in Devon and Cornwall.

“To exceed these expectations the way they have has been incredible and a huge amount of credit goes to all the players. Their attitude on and off the field, commitment to training, but most of all togetherness and team spirit has been second to none. They have an immense hunger to win which is something we try and instil into all of our young players at the club.

“The team adjusted extremely well to different pitches and pressure situations throughout the season, showing a great maturity and understanding of the game already. The majority are playing and contributing in our Saturday teams too.”
