HOLSWORTHY Cricket Club celebrated their most successful ever season with their annual presentation evening at The White Hart Hotel on Saturday, October 26.
The Trees, who run a Saturday side in the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League and a Sunday outfit in Division Three of the North Devon League, enjoyed a superb summer.
They saw off a spirited push from St Blazey to claim the Division Three East title, and although they were comfortably beaten by St Ives in the county final at Pencarrow, they can now prepare for their first-ever crack at third-tier cricket. Not bad for a club who only joined the Cornwall League back in 2008
The Sunday team, which mixes a number of promising youth players with older, more experienced players, came a highly-credible fourth.
The presentation night started with a two-course meal before chairman Dave Gerry, club captain Ryan Walter and youth co-ordinator George Wilcox gave speeches.
The presentation of the trophies, which were made by Tammy Hutchings, then followed with the winners being:
Saturday team
Batsman — Jack May (749 runs at 39.42); Bowler — Jack Greening (51 wickets at 12.08); Most catches — Ryan Walter/Ben Hutchings (12); Hundreds — Jack May (119 not out, 102 not out) and Aiden Gerry (115 not out); Five-wicket hauls — Jack Greening (4 inc 6-33, 5-17, 5-23 and 5-28).
Sunday team
Batsman — Matt Mansbridge (271 runs at 54.20); Bowler — Scott Bingham (14 wickets at 19.93, including a hat-trick at Newton Tracey).
Club trophies
Player of the Year — Matthew Shepherd (553 runs at 34.56, inc 36 sixes and 45 wickets at 16.11); Butterfingers Trophy — Liam Brend; Canard Trophy (most ducks) — Scott Bingham; Colin Walter Memorial Trophy (club achievement) — Dan Marks/Scott Bingham; Most Improved Player — Gerry O’Donoughue; Malcolm Woodward Memorial Trophy (best young player) — Will Priest.
Reflecting on the evening and the season as a whole, Walter said: “There was about 50 of us there and it was great to celebrate what was a brilliant season for the club.
“We did brilliantly to win Division Three East and we’re already excited for next season and trying to establish ourselves in the league above.
“We’re looking to sign a couple of players to help us and we should have Sam Stacey back to full fitness, which will be a massive help.
“We’ll keep the basis of the same side. We know that consistency in selection is important, but we have 14 or 15 players who are good enough to step up.
“The Sunday team also did very well, with the youngsters becoming the main part.
“On behalf of the club I’d like to thank everyone for their support and our main sponsors The White Hart Hotel for an excellent evening.”
