SWPL PREMIER WEST (WEDNESDAY)

Holsworthy 1 Launceston 1

DEBUTANT Cameron Dymond scored a late equaliser as Launceston earned a point at Upcott Field on Wednesday night.

Holsworthy dominated the early exchanges, with skipper Jedd Peschke a constant threat at set pieces.

The home defensive line remained dominant as the Clarets struggled to get a foothold in the game. Launceston’s Mike Steele and Archie Wall both collected soft bookings from referee Shaun Edge, but an uneventful half ended goalless.

That changed within minutes of the restart. A long free-kick found a way through the Launceston defence with Ollie Moores getting the final touch to put his side ahead.

The Clarets gradually began to make an impression and substitute Mark Elvidge looked to have equalised, only to be ruled offside.

Wall then had a minor coming together with Sam Jago, following which the referee showed yellow cards to both men, with Wall’s leading to an inevitable dismissal.

The luckless Elvidge suffered from another debatable offside decision as Launceston were denied an equaliser.

Remarkably, having created precious little with 11 men, Price’s ten men grabbed an 84th minute goal to stun Holsworthy’s largest crowd of the season.

Dan Clifton slanted in a deep cross from the left which Dymond converted at the back post to earn the battling Clarets a first league point since August.

SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

St Day 6 Launceston 1

THE injury crisis at Pennygillam shows no immediate sign of easing, despite encouraging signs from the midweek draw at Holsworthy.

Neil Price’s side travelled to the impressive Vogue Park on Saturday for the first-ever first team meeting with newly-promoted St Day.

The Clarets were missing eight likely starters on Saturday, resulting in one of the youngest sides ever to represent the club, while the hosts included a number of seasoned figures from Western League and SWPL level.

On a superb surface, the Clarets started brightly. Young Aaron Hughes fired a 20-yard volley past the far post before the same man hit a cross from the right that only just eluded Mark Elvidge.

Soon though the greater physicality of the home side began to show. Impressive former Wendron man Jacob Cleverly crossed for Phil Cattran to score, following which the much-travelled Kyle Marks made it 2-0 with a 20-yard drive.

The next booking went to Dan Clifton, a man not known for the ferocity of his tackling, but the Clarets were under pressure now and Joe Cooper made it 3-0 at the interval.

The main positive for Launceston was an outstanding midfield display by Jake Ham who consistently found time on the ball.

Cleverly made it four before Josh Harris got the Clarets on the board with a fierce 22-yard drive past Harry Salmon.

St Day added two more goals in injury time, from Josh Margetts and Tyler Oliver.

This was a tough afternoon for a raw Launceston side who will benefit from the experience.

LAUNCESTON: Lewis Slade; Morgan Jones, George Plumb, Archie Wall, Jude Jago, Josh Harris, Ryan Dawe, Jake Ham, Mark Elvidge, Aaron Hughes, Dan Clifton. Subs: Jack Japes, Lewis Clarke.

Clarets man of the match: Jake Ham.
