More than £60,000 in total has been raised by an animal-free research group in North Cornwall.
Most recently Animal Free Research UK’s Bude group raised more than £6,500 during its 2024 campaign.
The group, which campaigns for animal-free, human-specific testing that deliver better treatments for human diseases faster, has said that 2024 was an incredibly busy year, with a number of successful operations and a huge £6,848.59 raised.
The year ended with Angie Burke and Steph Jones-Giles taking a trip to Parliament to a reception held by the charity, who are working with MPs to introduce Herbie’s Law.”
Herbie’s Law is a proposed legislative framework which advocates for the replacement of animal experiments with innovative, human-specific research methods. These methods include artificial intelligence, computer modelling and ‘organ-on-a-chip’ technology.
Steph told the Post: “It was a brilliant way to end an exciting year. We were able to meet in person Carla Owen (CEO), Isobel Martin (Director of Public Affairs) and many others of the team at Animal Free Research UK. We also heard from scientists and supporting MPs.
“I am delighted to say that Ben Maguire MP for North Cornwall attended the reception and is committed to supporting Herbie’s Law. He is also extremely supportive of the work of the Bude Group for which I am very appreciative”
With 2025 being the Bude group’s 10th anniversary, members are hopeful that they can raise even more - having raised a huge £61,676.46 since the group started.
As part of the anniversary, they are looking for ten individuals, couples, groups or businesses to raise £100 each to add £1,000 to the funds.
Those interested in getting involved are asked to contact Steph Jones-Giles on 07971 454214 to discuss the project further.
