LAUNCESTON College has launched new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Coffee Mornings to help parents and carers connect with SEND professionals.
These sessions, led by Sam Craig, Assistant SENDCO at Launceston College, aim to provide parents and carers with valuable resources, insights, and a supportive space to connect with professionals and each other.
The first session focused on supporting young people with autism. It featured experts from the Cornwall Autism Team and the Autism Champions at Launceston College, allowing attendees to share experiences and access helpful advice and resources.
Jo Carlton, SENDCO at Launceston College, and her team have been working closely with the school community to tailor these sessions. She said: “We’re committed to supporting our families and breaking down barriers between home and school.
“These sessions will provide a safe and welcoming environment where parents can share experiences and build a network of support.”
Future SEND Coffee Morning sessions are planned for every half term and will cover a variety of topics to support both students and their families, including:
- Mental Health Support for Young People: Meet Dr. Magill (Clinical Psychologist) and Jessica Careswell (Health Hub Lead)
- Dyslexia Cornwall: Meet with the Dyslexia Cornwall team and Launceston College staff to gain insights into dyslexia,
Future topics will include executive functioning, local support services, and post-16 provision with Careers South West and local providers. Launceston College is also exploring partnerships with local community groups and external professionals to expand the support network available to families.
Mr Matthew Thompson, Principal at Launceston College said: “I am delighted that we are able to offer these SEND coffee mornings and that parents and carers have already found them to be valuable. These sessions offer positive, proactive support for our students and their families, and we’re excited to continue offering these opportunities every half term.”
