THE very last Scottish dance weekend school was held in Bude recently, with those in attendance reportedly enjoying their final dance.

The Marhamchurch Scottish Country Dance Club has said that while it will no longer be offering weekend events after 28 years of the club running, the members will still meet every Wednesday evening at the Central Methodist Hall in Bude.

The couple who organised the weekends over many years, Les and Dawn Burden, were given thanks for their hard work over ‘many years’, with their efforts leading to the successful running of the events.

A spokesperson said: “We have had such fun, and made so many friends over the past 28 years, and we are sorry it has to end’

“Marhamchurch Scottish Country Dance Club would like to thank everyone who has travelled to Bude from all over Britain, and the World, to attend our weekends through the years. Also many thanks to Sandy Nixon and his Scottish Dance Band, who have been our 'resident' band since 2008, your spirited playing has inspired and entertained us all. Thanks to all the teachers and musicians who have given their time and expertise through the years.

“To club members and local people who have cooked, cleaned, decorated, washed up and served drinks, even giving up their holiday to help out, and to the caretaker of The Parkhouse - thank you all.

“Last, but by no means least, to Les and Dawn Burden, who have organised the weekends for so many years, thank you. They would not have been the success they have without your organization, hard work and commitment.”

Presentations were made to Les and Dawn by visitors and club members, and Les thanked everyone for attending. Special mention was made of Don and Gay Heath, who have attended every single weekend since they began in 1996.

“So, the weekend schools have ended, but the club still meets every Wednesday evening at the Central Methodist Hall in Bude, 7.30pm to 10pm. Beginners and visitors are very welcome. For more information, telephone 01840 261708, or email [email protected]
