IT was a busy weekend for Holsworthy’s fire crew contending with not only the impact of Storm Bert, but a major vehicle fire near to the town.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a lorry on fire on the outskirts of Holsworthy during the early hours of the morning of Sunday, November 24.

‘Explosions’ emanating from the alight vehicle were reportedly heard through the town centre, with the fire requiring the use of five engines and a water bowser.

Fortunately, the present fire crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the alight vehicle, with assistance provided by crews from neighbouring Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s Bude Community Fire Station.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Three fire engines, one from Holsworthy and two from Bude, and the Water Bowser from Barnstaple were mobilised to a lorry on fire on the outskirts of Holsworthy.

“On arrival the vehicle was well alight and the explosions heard throughout town. The blaze was brought under control and prevented from spreading by crews using two jets, four breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera and ladders for access.

“Many thanks to our colleagues from Bude Community Fire Station for quickly backing us up and helping bringing the incident to a conclusion.”
