THE closure of a popular beach car park in Bude has been postponed following concern from local residents.
Bude residents expressed their worries recently after Cornwall Council announced the planned closure of Crooklets Beach car park for a one week period to allow for resurfacing.
Along with the closure, it was announced that there would be no access to the public toilets during this time.
Following the announcement, many residents expressed their concern, with many arguing that the closure could effect local businesses during peak summer times and that it would be more suitable to repair damaged roads instead of the car park.
One resident said: “This is literally the stupidest decision Cornwall Council. wait until people will want to use the carpark then close it. January may have been a bit more sensible.”
However, following local concern, Cornwall Councillor Peter LaBroy approached Cornwall Council in the hope of having works postponed until after the peak holiday season.
After approaching the council, Cllr LaBroy announced that works would no longer be taking place in July.
He said: “It was confirmed late last evening (July 11) that the resurfacing works at Crooklets car park is deferred until after the summer season.
“The project came about after a member of the community pointed out to me the lines in the car park have all disappeared from wear.
“The Cornwall Council (Cormac) team decided that reapplying lines to the broken up surface wouldn't stick, so resurfacing is necessary.
“In March this year, I wrote to the team asking that the main summer season was to be avoided for this resurfacing/lining work. Once I was aware of the timing, the local concern voiced on social media - then significantly the plan from BSTC to close the toilets throughout the work, it was clear it couldn't go ahead at this time.
“I will make sure that rescheduling will have much better consultation from Cornwall Council with myself, local businesses and the Town Council.”
