PLANS for a Domino’s Pizza have been approved for the former Co-op site in Bude.
The national pizza chain is set to take up residence at the former supermarket on Burn View.
Following the application, there were 36 objections in total lodged with the local authority. Bude-Stratton Town Council, in its consultation response, told Cornwall Council it had no objections to the application.
Residents’ concerns were acknowledged in an accompanying planning report, which said: “The concerns of local residents are understood. However, the proposal is for a change of use to 'hot food takeaway, (sui generis use class)'.
“The considerations of the planning application including whether the proposed use class is suitable. The change of use application would not limit this to a Pizza Place only and any cuisine of takeaway could operate from the premises.”
However, following a poll conducted by the Post asking residents for their thoughts on the installation of the branch, of 508 votes, 62 per cent of respondents (318 votes) said that they were happy with the pizza chain’s introduction.
One resident commented: “How many places in Bude can you order via an app, a fully customised pizza, a bottle of fizzy drink, a side and a dessert for under £30, at any time of night and get it delivered to your home and pay via card? [...] its nice to see Bude joining the rest of the country and advancing.”
Another added: “More choice for everyone!”
However, despite many locals expressing their excitement at the new introduction, a large proportion of residents have said they’re less happy. As part of the poll, 38 per cent (190 votes) of residents said they weren’t happy about the plans’ approval.
One resident said: “Unfortunately, first Domino’s, then the rest will follow and our independents will close, leaving empty premises and Bude will end up like many other seaside towns.”
Another added: “Another multinational to kill off our local enterprise.”
However, with no exact opening date confirmed at this time, the town will have to wait for the chain to make an appearance.
