Sidmouth Town 1 Launceston 2
THE Clarets stepped up the intensity of their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory at Sidmouth Town in the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
Launceston were missing a few key figures, with the likes of skipper Mike Steele and top scorer Andy Watkins still absent, but boss Neil Price fielded a stronger side than the week previous at Torrington.
After an even start, the Clarets took the lead in the 12th minute. Striker Lewis Young, who also scored the opening goal last week, did well to control a through ball before neatly slotting home from eight yards.
The first half saw both sides create good chances, with keeper Lewis Slade needing to react sharply to keep the lively home forwards at bay. In front of Slade, central defenders Jude Jago and Archie Wall were given a thorough test, with Josh Harris and Ollie Northam contributing well in the full-back positions. George Beardsmore, Jaden Wood and Denham Guild provided a strong midfield unit.
Sidmouth equalised after 33 minutes with a soft goal that probably should have been avoided, but the Clarets moved back in front shortly before the break with an excellent Lewis Young effort. The striker controlled a through ball and struck a curling 20-yard drive up and over the home keeper into the far corner.
Manager Price rang the changes during the interval, with a welcome return for influential midfielder James Close, unavailable for much of last season. Price also gave a first Launceston outing to strapping teenage striker Ismail Badjie-Heath who caused problems for the home defence with his direct, powerful running.
Despite chances at both ends, there were no further goals in the second half, as Launceston enjoyed an away win.
Things get tougher this Saturday when newly-crowned Western League champions Helston Athletic visit Pennygillam (3pm).
