JACK Ralph took 5-18 as Werrington’s cricketers slipped to a second successive home thrashing as St Just left Ladycross with a six-wicket victory in the ECB Cornwall Premier League.
The home side went into the game off the back of a 26-run victory in a rain-affected clash at Truro the week before, but just like against Redruth a fortnight earlier, their batting let them down.
Werrington were without former captain Ben Smeeth, which meant a slight reshuffle.
Director of cricket Adam Hodgson was promoted to open from number four with youngster George Rickard taking Hodgson’s spot.
Werrington reached 21-0, but John Moon and Hodgson both departed on that score.
Moon (13) was bowled by Ellis May while Hodgson found Neil Curnow off the wily Ben Stevens.
Thulina Dilshan struck his first hundred at Truro but he was out for just two, picking out Jack Ralph for May’s second.
Rickard and Mark Gribble added 24 before the former became Ralph’s first of the afternoon.
He then soon took care of Ryan Pooley (5) and Ben Jenkin (3), and when Gribble (25) found Logan Curnow off Chamikara Edirisinghe it was 97-7.
Skipper Nick Lawson made 11 but the final three wickets added just five.
Werrington needed early wickets to have any chance and Dan Barnard struck in the first over as Dom Angove (0) edged behind to Lawson.
But Neil Curnow and Alex McKenna withstood Barnard and fellow paceman Sam Hockin (0-20).
Dilshan (1-42) eventually bowled McKenna for 24 and Adam Hodgson (2-21) proved too wily for youngsters Ellis May and Logan Curnow, but Curnow (49no) was joined by Phil Nicholas (9no) to get the visitors over the line.
Werrington Seconds had a double-header over the weekend in Division Two East and secured victories in both.
On Saturday they headed down to promoted Ladock and made a healthy 220-6 with the in-form Tom Lyle contributing once again with an unbeaten 81.
Opener Rob May made 30 while there were chip-ins from debutant Ed Walters (19), Marley May (17) and Billy Uglow (16).
Ladock finished 22 short despite only losing six wickets.
Skipper Jason Seldon was the pick of the visiting attack with 1-13 from his nine overs, while Lyle’s rarely seen off-breaks claimed 3-31.
Sunday saw a visit from their Callington counterparts.
Although Marley May (20), Ryan Pooley (42) and Tom Lyle (21) all made starts, their impressive total of 252 all out was m possible by numbers eight and nine, Jordan Duke and skipper Jason Seldon.
Duke struck three fours and as many sixes in his 53 while Seldon was top scorer with 55.
Callington got off to a bad start as Jordan Duke (2-32) and Nick Oldaker both struck, and although opener Toby May reached 50, wickets continued to fall, five of which were to off-spinner Mark Hodgson.
He took 5-35 from his nine overs as Callington were all out for 179. Alex Robinson was unbeaten on 40.
Dan Warring smacked 108, but it wasn’t enough for Werrington Thirds against visiting Boconnoc.
They made a healthy 243-5 at home to Boconnoc which was also propped up by Simon Bishop (38) and Ian Wills (42).
Number seven Ian Hunter smashed 16 fours in 97 not out as the visitors got over the line by four wickets with ten balls to spare. Ian Searle took 3-16 for Werrington.
The fourths ran into a significantly strengthened South Petherwin Seconds side who ran out winners by 29 runs.
A sixth wicket stand between Adrian Martin (39) and Gareth Clements (42) helped them reach 192-9 before James Cawsey (3-49) and Emma Barnes (3-29) shared six wickets.
Openers Antony Sachs (33) and Andrew Smeeth (38) gave Werrington a platform but an inexperienced middle and lower order struggled to keep up with the asking rate.
