LAUNCESTON Tennis Club members have been pleased to play tennis during the winter under the new floodlights when the weather has allowed.

On dry evenings club nights have been well attended with all ages enjoying the sport and comradeship.

Two teams have been competing in the Cornwall Winter League competition. The A team have been very successful in Division One East before Christmas; defeating Perran A 9-2, St Austell A 7-4 and Truro B 7-4.

They were beaten 10-0 at Newquay before last week drawing the return at Perran A 5-5.

Those to have played so far are Adam Baker, Richard Rodda, Charlotte Halls, Ruth Cornish, Alexander Cornish, Sam Tucker, Tonia Jones, Hayley Frayn, Tiva Daka and Elijah Daka.

The B team have not fared so well but have enjoyed all the matches.

They started by defeating Bude 10-3 but have since lost to Wadebridge (8-5), Perran C (10-1) and Truro C (10-1) with Adam Baker, Barry Frayn, Suzanne Cole, Ruth Cornish, Jimmy Shanks, Tonia Jones, Jenny Worth, Marc Perry, Rod Wood, Tracey Manning, Mary Shanks and Mary Simpson all competing.

The Perran B match was postponed twice due to named storms.

Between Christmas and the New Year the annual tournament took place on a dry, calm Monday with 10 players competing, the format being two teams of five – each player playing four matches of doubles and one of singles.

The tournament was followed by a delicious bring and share lunch.

Coaching sessions with James Brobin have restarted for both adults and juniors.

The family tennis session on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 11am are continuing, giving all the juniors time to practice all that they have learnt with James and even give their parents a few tips.
