THE Winter League at Roadford came to an exciting conclusion last on Saturday, April 12, with Boscastle and Crackington Gig Club finishing in first place.

They edged out runners-up Bude Gig Club with Appledore making up the top three.

In the last of six hard-fought meetings that started in October 2024, 13 Gig clubs battled it out, in all weather conditions. Some fantastic racing and close finishes unfolded, while great club camaraderie made for a very successful series.

Run jointly by the Boscastle and Bude clubs, this involved many hours of hard work by members from both organisations and the permission of South West Lakes Trust to hold the event at Roadford.

Of the clubs that took part, they came from a very wide geographical area in some very competitive racing, with age categories from Juniors (12-16) to Masters (Over 60), showing that gig rowing is a sport for all age groups.

Some notable results were Boscastle Ladies Supervets A crew who won six out of six, while Boscastle’s Juniors were also in fine form, failing to take victory in just one of the six races.

All clubs are now focusing on the World Championships taking place on the Isles of Scilly over the first May Bank Holiday.

This is a much-anticipated event, and with Boscastle and Bude taking two boats each, it giving eight different crews a chance to participate.

Good luck to everyone taking part in this prestigious event, races can be watched live on YouTube, commencing on Friday, May 2 at 11.30am.
