North Cornwall Table Tennis League latest round-up

CHAMPIONS North Hill A and rivals Bridgerule A have both got their season off to a winning start in Division One.

While the rest of the league started last week, North Hill welcomed Stratton Assassins, formerly Budehaven C, on September 26 and eased to a 9-1 success.

The home side drafted in Mike Wood for the evening and although he was narrowly beaten by Elyot Burnett for the visitors’ sole point, he saw off Anthony Ward and Ian Westaway.

Iain Oxenham produced a fine result to beat Burnett for his treble, but it was Shirley Luckhurst that produced a player of the match performance as she won all three singles and the doubles.

Bridgerule welcomed North Hill B on Monday, September 30, and after a close encounter, eventually came out on top 7-3.

David Streak was pushed all the way in the opener by Mike Wood, before Peter Frier levelled it up by seeing off the returning Helen Johns.

Streak won all three as he usually does, and with further points coming from Johns, Peter Freeburn (2) and the doubles (Streak and David Stone), they got the job done despite a win apiece for Wood, Frier and Jim Rickwood.

Budehaven A started with a 9-1 success at Crackington A.

Aleks Worth and Alistair Prades enjoyed comfortable a night’s work with a whitewash only saved by Ross Paynter’s fine comeback in the final set to beat David Sillifant after being 10-7 down in the decider.

Division Two saw newcomers Blisland see off Crackington B 7-3 with Chris Baverstock and Stephen Parsons unbeaten all evening, while Budehaven D beat Altarnun B 6-4, helped by Louis Konowalik’s treble.

Ben Shute got a double, and with David Partridge also winning, it was enough.

Altarnun’s points came via Paul Burden (2), David Thorpe and the doubles.
