WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE
Camborne School of Mines 1 Bude 3
BUDE rounded off their season with back-to-back victories as they won 3-1 at Camborne School of Mines.
The Seasiders were handed a walkover by the Students earlier in the season, and despite the long trip down, started well and took an early lead as Evelyn Varcoe collected the ball and drove sharply down the left wing and baseline before finding Chloe Hall on the back post and she made no mistake.
It was 2-0 inside the opening ten minutes as a mazy run from Charlotte Prime saw her find EJ Biggadike on the penalty spot and her powerful strike found the net.
It was then the turn of Bude’s defence of Willow Du Plessis, Clare Westaway and Naomi Hatcher to be tested – and the hosts eventually pulled one back.
But with the midfield and attack of Evelyn Varcoe, Ej Biggadike, Phoebe Gannon, Caroline Hockridge and Briony Varcoe all putting in a shift, they got through to half-time in front.
After the turnaround Bude were back on the front foot to begin with, but soon needed some fine saves from Jo Timmins to maintain their lead.
Some beautiful clearances from Hatcher and strategical saves on the line from Westaway kept their lead intact.
With that base, fellow defender Du Plessis drove into midfield and soon the hosts saw a player given a green card.
Sensing their chance to kill the game, player-of-the-match Du Plessis took it upon herself to grab the third with a superb run and finish that left the home side in her wake.
Bude then saw out the rest of the game with minimum fuss as they ended the campaign in eighth with eight victories and two draws from their 20 outings.
