WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE

Plymouth University 2 Bude 2

BUDE earned a point from their trip to Devon on Saturday as they played out a 2-2 draw with University of Plymouth Seconds at the Lipson Academy.

After a slightly delayed start, Bude started well with their midfield that consisted of Katie Jackson, Ej Biggadike, and joint man of the match Caroline Hockridge and Mia Flynn, all effective.

Forwards EV Varcoe and Charlotte Prime were working hard, and after the Seasiders won a short corner, Hockridge made no mistake for 1-0.

However, as Bude relaxed into the game, Plymouth were able to make a quick turnover. Despite efforts from a strong defence showcasing Naomi Hatcher, Willie Du Plessis and Clare Westaway, the hosts gained a short corner which they equalised from.

As the first half concluded, Bude captains Izzy Sobey and Phoebe Gannon rallied the team and they came back onto the pitch feeling determined.

The second 35 saw some great teamwork and resilience from all players, particularly goalkeeper Jo Timmins with some fine saves to keep the Seasiders level.

Soon after, Hatcher distributed the ball from defence and Sobey received and drove to the line where Bude were awarded another short corner.

The team discussed tactics and decided to try a new routine they had practiced at training, and this paid off as Gannon swept the ball home to put them back in front, an advantage they kept for much of the remainder of the game despite some home pressure.

However, as energy levels decreased in the last few minutes, the university caught a lucky ball in the Bude D and found the net for an equaliser.

Bude tried to rally themselves, but couldn’t find a winner as they sit seventh in the 11-team division.

The Seasiders welcome Okehampton on Saturday (midday).
