Away match v Perranporth — Monday, July 2
ON A SUN-BAKED Perranporth day, the seniors endeavoured to see whether they could compete against the locals on an excellent and very difficult seaside links course.
It could have been the sun that was their downfall, or the lack of trees that the visitors are so used to playing through. Whatever it was, it came with a vengeance.
From the outset the writing was on the wall, or rather written on the bare fairways and the brown greens.
Not one of the visiting pairs could make any headway against the home team.
The only consolation for the whitewash was David Jackson being the winner of a bottle of wine for his excellent effort of ’nearest the pin’ on the final hole.
As ever, the welcome from the hosts at Perranporth was warm and friendly and the after match meal was excellent.
For the Launceston side, the return match on Friday, July 27 will give them a chance of revenge when picking their way through the trees that were nowhere in evidence on their day by the sea!
Senior captain versus vice-captain match — Tuesday, July 3
SENIOR captain, John Bassett’s team pitted their wits against Alan Ferguson’s team and eventually won by 664 points to 638.
After the game, Bassett said: “Thank you all for playing today in this annual competition which was closely contested.
“Fortunately for me, the captain’s team came up trumps, with a score of 664 points to 638, and there were some very good scores. Congratulations to those members who played for me, even though you may not of realised it during your round.”
The winning scores are as follows:
Winners: David Price and Bill Chamberlain — 45pts; Runners-up: Martin Ryan and wildcard (Alan Creber) — 44pts; 3rd: John Rumbold and Phil Bott — 43pts; 4th: Alan Bessell and Stuart Phillpotts — 43pts (l/c); 5th: Phil Mitchell and Rodney Duke — 42pts; 6th: Derek Ratcliffe and Graham Nevitte — 42pts (l/c)

Kivell Cup Bogey competition — Sunday, July 1
AFTER weeks of scorching hot weather, the forecast was for possible thundershowers on Sunday morning and so it proved with the rain starting as the first groups teed off and continued unabated for the majority of the competition.
The steady rain did upset the rhythm of some, but clearly not the two leading scorers Darren Chapman and Phil Bott, who finished at 4up and 3up respectively in this matchplay against the course format.
Both will be having visits from the handicap scissors!
