North Devon League round-up - Saturday, January 11
FOR the second week running, Morwenstow overcame a deficit and snatched a last-minute winner to stretch their unbeaten league run to nine games as they won 2-1 at Bideford Reserves.
The first half was in the balance, with both goalkeepers kept busy keeping things level.
It was only when Morwenstow looked to quickly counter-attack after defending a corner that they were undone. As the Greens pushed to attack, possession quickly changed hands and Bideford striker Billy Rose was left unmarked to give the home team the advantage before the break.
After half-time the visitors managed to stamp their authority on the game, looking a constant threat going forward.
When Morwenstow’s winger Corrick Davies was fouled on the edge of the box, Ben Pengilly stepped up and fired the resulting free-kick into the top corner.
As the game edged nearer to its climax, it was only a matter of time before the North Cornwall side took the lead.
With two minutes remaining, Pengilly ran onto a through ball supplied by Jake Gilbert down the right-hand side and floated it towards the back-post, where the returning Phil Horton headed in the winner to move the visitors up to fourth in the Senior Division.
In the same league, Shebbear United were beaten 1-0 at unbeaten leaders Braunton Reserves.
To cap off a fine day for Morwenstow, the reserves also tasted victory as they saw off Kingsley Wizards 2-0 at Shop Playing Field.
Goals from Oska Holmes and debutant Rio Colgrave were enough for a second win of the season for the Greens.
Bradworthy had a disappointing afternoon as they were beaten 3-2 at Braunton Thirds who remain three points ahead in second.
Harrison Palmer and Tim Summers got the visitors’ goals.
Putford’s clash at Combe Martin Reserves was postponed.
