Carlsberg South West Peninsula League
Division One (West)
Bere Alston United 1
BRAD Birch made it four goals in three games as Holsworthy returned to winning ways in a match which saw them miss a host of chances at the Recreation Field.
The Magpies could have won the game by a much greater margin. But a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Michael Moore denied them.
Dean Chidley, returning after ten months out injured, was rarely troubled with only one save of note to make in the 90 minutes.
Holsworthy started well with teenager Max MacDonald driving the team on, and it was his pass to Dom Abbott who had the first opening only for his shot to be well saved.
Joe Barker, Birch and Abbott all went close before Shaun Jones’ inch-perfect cross was headed home by Birch.
Birch could have doubled the lead soon after, but for the Bere Alston goalkeeper saving smartly to his left.
Further chances came and went as the Magpies wondered how they were only 1-0 ahead at the break.
The second-half continued in the same vain as Birch hit the bar and Abbott, Birch and Barker all drove shots just wide.
As often is the case, a failure to take your chances normally leads to an equaliser and it did as United countered well with Aaron Rockey slotting in from 12 yards.
United then went close to a second when a header was saved by Chidley.
Holsworthy passed the ball superbly throughout and neat play led to Harry Barrett missing a golden chance from two yards.
Abbott twice, Barker and Birch all went close before Kieran Langman forced Moore into a sharp save.
Abbott continues to cause Bere problems and his run was ended by a crude challenge 20 yards from goal. From the resulting free kick, Birch smashed it home into the bottom corner.
Harrison Palmer and Abbott went close to a third but in the end it didn’t matter as they moved back to sixth.
Player/manager, Liam Dart, said: “It was a well earned three points, but it could have been made a lot easier.”
Bude Town 0
St Blazey 2
THE visitors left Broadclose Park with all three points to leave Bude third from bottom.
The first-half was a tight affair with neither side creating many chances.
However the Green and Blacks, who themselves are just a place above the Seasiders in the table, took the lead through midfielder Callum McGhee before substitute Lloyd Russell made sure of the points later on.
RGB Cornwall Senior Cup (third-round)
Bodmin Town 4
Camelford 1
THERE was controversy aplenty at Priory Park on Saturday as Camelford were knocked out of the RGB Cornwall Senior Cup at Bodmin Town.
Stuart Bowker converted an early penalty to put Bodmin ahead before the Camels were left furious.
From a ball in, Josh Insley’s shot appeared to have gone well over the line before it was scooped out by goalkeeper Cory Harvey.
With the visitors appealing furiously to the officials, Harvey threw the ball out to Bowker who was brought down on halfway by Adam Jenkin.
Jenkin had earlier been booked for dissent to the referee and was sent for an early bath.
Missing four of their most attacking players in Adam Sleep, Mark Gusterson, Harry Wilshaw and Andy Boxall, the Camels struggled to keep the ball but managed to get through to half-time.
Their perseverance was rewarded early on as Tom Cowling slotted in from a couple of yards out to give hope of the unlikeliest of victories.
However Bodmin scored three times in the final 20 minutes to move into the quarter-finals with Harry Evans tapping home a rebound, Bowker adding his second and Evans then doing likewise from the penalty spot.
Launceston 3
Liskeard Athletic 0
LAUNCESTON put a series of poor performances firmly behind them as they handed high-flying Liskeard Athletic a sound beating to move into the last eight of the RGB Cornwall Senior Cup.
Recent games have seen the Clarets start slowly but on Saturday they flew out of the traps.
Young striker Mark Elvidge — recently signed from Duchy Premier Division side North Petherwin — was handed the number nine shirt and had the ball in the net after 10 minutes only to be ruled marginally offside. But a few minutes later the team fashioned a fine goal. Jack Lee, playing further forward than of late, slanted over a superb cross from the left for Tallan Mitchell to head past the stranded Jamie Blatchford.
Jordan Walton missed a couple of decent chances while Launceston keeper Josh Colwill was forced into a series of smart saves, the best of which saw him tip a powerful header from the lively Macauley Thorp over the bar.
The Clarets reached the break clinging to their one-goal lead but Liskeard, unbeaten in the league below all season, weren’t about to accept defeat quietly and referee Shaun Edge was soon firing yellow cards in all directions.
The visitors introduced highly-regarded SWPL top scorer James Lorenz for the final 20 minutes, despite the striker suffering a broken toe in midweek. But it was Launceston who made the game safe with another terrific team goal. Dan Metherell and the excellent Mitchell combined to set up Jordan Walton for a 74th minute tap-in.
Substitute Mike Steele then made it 3-0 as the game moved into injury time, to hand the increasingly disgruntled visitors a rare defeat.
However Mike Walton’s men will be given a much sterner examination on Saturday (3pm) as they head to title favourites Tavistock, who are likely to include the recently departed Sam Davey in their ranks.
