THE 15th annual Pyworthy football tournament took place on Saturday, July 9.
As ever, the turnout was excellent, with 38 teams competing across the five age-groups. Teams from as far away as Ilfracombe and mid-Devon came for a day in the sun.
Held in the village park, there were two grass pitches used, along with the astroturf pitch where the finals and big games took place.
Playing five-aside, ten-minute games with rolling subs, players were encouraged to keep the ball on the floor and to pass their way through their opponents while referees from the Devon FA were on hand to officiate and keep things under control.
In the under 8s competition, six teams took part, with Week St Mary coming out on top. In the under 9/10 tournament, seven teams entered as Bude Yellows took the title.
In the under 11/12 age-group, the winners were from just across the border at Hatherleigh. The under13/14 competition saw 12 teams enter, which were split into three groups before the group winners and best second-placed team went through to the semi-finals before the Dream Team were the eventual winners. Egg Fried Reus with one of the best names of the day were the champions of the under15/16’s. Tracey Langman who helped organise the day was as usual delighted with how the day panned out.?
Tracey said: “We had another brilliant day at the Pyworthy Football Tournament. We’d like to thank Pyworthy Park for allowing us to use the site, the teams, parents and families for supporting the event, The referees for officiating, Doctor David Hillebrandt and Teresa North Lewis for being on hand of any incidents and all the sponsors and local businesses for supporting us.”
