WEEK two of the Women’s Indoor Cricket League, held at Cornwall Cricket Centre Truro on Friday, January 24, saw some great action from all the teams involved.

Truro stormed to the top of the table whilst Werrington leapfrogged Wadebridge with their first win to take second in the table.

Truro dominated the opener winning the toss in the first game and choosing to bowl against Werrington. After a slow start and some tight bowling from Truro’s opening bowlers, Tamsin Heayn picked up the first wicket of Zoe Jenkin with a smart catch and bowled.

Grace Kirby came to the crease and with Emma Horrell and steadied the ship. Both batters played some thumping shots against the net to keep the scores ticking in singles, however, some slick and well drilled fielding from Truro made it difficult for the batters to rotate and score the twos and threes, vital scoring options in the indoor game.

Ashley Bridges was the other wicket taker for Truro, Tamsin with her second catch of the innings. Grace and Tilly ended the innings with a partnership of 21, Grace with a massive six to end off the innings. Truro’s tight bowling though was highlighted by the fact they only gave away two extras in the innings, limiting Werrington to a below par 44-1 off their 10 overs.

Truro made light work of the run chase, Hannah Grice and wicket-keeper Emma knocking off the runs in 5.1 overs. Both batters showed different qualities whilst chasing the runs, Hannah running hard with nudges and nurdles whilst Emma using her power to find the boundary down the ground.

Werrington got their first win in the league after seeing off Helston.

Batting first against a young and promising Helston side, Grace Kirby and Freya Bailey got off to a great start.

Grace showed a much improved awareness of tactics for the indoor game, compared with her first knock, looking to run the ball into gaps and rotating the strike. The partnership showed great communication with the batters who complimented each other well, until Freya fell to a smart run out.

After Grace retired at 25, mum, Hayley Kirby came in and finished off the innings well, supported by Tilly Paynter, scoring at over nines in the last three overs.

Hayley with a well struck four in the last over taking the score onto 79-1, carrying the momentum into the second innings.

Zoe was bang on target for Werrington, bowling Helston’s opener Jess with her first ball.

Lizzie and Amber looked to go after the target, however, an unfortunate breakdown in communication left Amber stranded half way down the wicket and was run out. Lizzie showed resilience scoring 12, however the Helston innings fell away and were eventually bowled out for 35. All five Werrington bowlers hunted well as a pack and produced, collectively, some very economical bowling figures.

The final game of the night saw Helston give much-fancied Truro a real scare before going down by 14 runs have been set 86 to win.

The city club had earlier posted 85-0.

Helston will hope to pick up their first win on February 19, but before then the action continues on February 10 when Wadebridge face Perranporth, followed by Truro against Redruth.
