Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores
JOHN Moon hit his first league century as Werrington seconds moved to within four points of safety in County Division One with a massive 217-run win over Launceston in the local derby at Ladycross.
Mark Hodgson’s men were bowled out for just 29 at Helston the week before, but Moon’s unbeaten 129 (14 fours) coupled with Hodgson’s 86 (16 fours) meant the visitors needed 302, which proved far too many.
In a bold move, Hodgson won the toss and chose to bat. And although Ian Searle was bowled by Sam Pengelly (2-53) for just a single, Nick Ward (21) and Moon steadied the ship with a partnership of 64 before Ward was trapped lbw by Andrew Yelland.
However his dismissal brought Hodgson to the crease and he and Moon took the Launceston bowlers to the cleaners, putting on 140 before Hodgson was lbw to Peter West for 86.
The hosts continued to swing away at the end with Danny Warne making a quick 20 in their 301-7.
The Launceston reply got off to a disastrous start as as the top three made just four between them, two of them being bowled by spinner Mark Taskis (2-8).
Pengelly (14) and Gavin Wallis (37) set about rebuilding the innings but once Pengelly was caught behind off Cameron Wakefield (3-15), only Robert Mutch (13) reached double figures.
Nick Ward completed a fine all-round game with 2-15 while Freddie Ward chipped in with 2-0 at the end.
That result coupled with a win for Ludgvan and a defeat for Gorran at Troon, means that Werrington are four points behind Gorran ahead of their home game with Ludgvan on Saturday.
Importantly for Gorran, they welcome winless St Austell seconds, so Werrington know that in all likelihood, they must win.
Launceston are 23 points clear of the drop but travel to champions-elect Camborne before welcoming Gorran on the final day.
A heavy loss at Roskear combined with wins for Gorran and Werrington would set up a remarkable finish.
In the ECB Cornwall Premier, struggling Callington could only pick up two points as they lost by 205 runs to Penzance, who will be guaranteed their first ever title on Saturday if they manage to win or pick up all ten bonus points.
The visitors made an imposing 290-5 at Moores Park with Antony Angove’s unbeaten 124 the highest.
He put on 137 for the second wicket with Scott Harvey (71) before South African Dylan Blignaut’s 36 off just 28 balls took them up towards 300.
Aidan Libby (0-31) and Yannick Leonard (1-34) both bowled economically.
Callington’s reply got off to a decent start at 33-1 before Danny Carroll was bowled by Glyn Furnival for 18.
The introduction of player/coach Greg Smith turned the game on its head as he took 6-27 off his ten overs to bowl the hosts out for just 85.
Callington’s failure to reach 100 meant no batting points, and with Falmouth getting six points from a loss at home to Grampound, it looks as if it’ll go down to a final-day showdown at Trescobeas.
Werrington look set to finish third after a five-wicket defeat at Wadebridge.
The visitors won the toss and chose to bat but fell to 23-2 as Charlie Ellis dismissed Adam Jenkin (5) and star man Paul Smith (0) in the same over.
Adam Hodgson and the in-form Matt Robins (36) put on 83 for the third wicket to get them back on top before Alek Gill (2-40) got rid of Robins and Mark Gribble (0) to swing the momentum back.
Hodgson gradually upped the scoring rate and look set for a deserved century before he was stumped for 94 off Ellis, who had taken the brilliant figures of 6-33.
Some late order runs got them up to 205-9.
The Wadebridge reply was built around South African run-machine Kevin Renecke.
When he departed at 155-4 — bowled by Hodgson for 77 — he’d enjoyed useful partnerships with James Turpin (12), Matthew Jolliffe (15) and Tom McLachlan (36).
The rest of the chase was dominated by Matt Butler’s 30-ball 39 as the target was reached with 28 balls to spare. Tom Dinnis took 2-39.
Luckett racked up the highest score in Division Two East this season as they obliterated relegated Ladock by 330 runs at Chapel Field.
Openers Richard Brown and Luke Brenton put on 272 for the first wicket with Brown (161) outscoring the left-hander by 11.
Jonathan Hoskin’s 48 plus 56 extras helped them eventually finish on 449-4 off their 45 overs.
The visitors could only muster 119 in response with Simon Newland’s 48 the best, while Mark Southcott (2-17) and Leion Cole (2-38) were the leading wicket-takers.
Thomas Hall fell agonisingly short of a century as Bude fell to a nine-run defeat at St Erme.
Chris Carter’s 3-50 kept the hosts in check as they totalled 236-6.
Opening the batting, Hall enjoyed partnerships of 42, 61 and 62 with Matthew Mansbridge (27), Matt Williams (32) and Andrew De Rosa (18) as they got to 186-3.
Despite the dismissal of De Rosa, Hall guided them to 226-7 before he got caught for 99. The tail then added just one between them as Bude were all out with seven balls remaining.
St Minver moved out of the bottom two after an excellent four-wicket victory at second-placed Menheniot-Looe.
Menheniot were restricted to 207-6 off their 45 overs with Will Durrant (3-36) and Allistair Cottle (2-41) sharing five of the wickets to fall.
The St Minver reply was a collective effort as all of the top seven reached double figures. But the crucial innings was played by Steve Hawke from number seven as he made an unbeaten 40 to get them home with five balls to spare.
In Division Three East, leaders Holsworthy won for the first time in five games to guarantee promotion, as they eased past relegation-threatened St Neot by 97 runs at Stanhope Park to go five points clear of St Blazey, who also went up with a six-wicket win at Roche seconds.
Skipper Ryan Walter led from the front with an unbeaten 56 as ‘the trees’ recovered from 69-4 to post 205-6. Jack May (22) got the early runs before Jack Greening (14), Ben Hutchings (21) and Rob Mitchell (18no) provided Walter with useful support.
The visitors recovered from a shaky start to reach 74-3 with David Eldridge (30) and David Masters (19) to the fore. However when Liam Jones was dismissed at 97-4, the final five wickets fell for just 11 runs. All six of Holsworthy’s bowlers were in the wickets with Matt Shepherd (2-23), Rob Mitchell (2-31) and George Wilcox (2-1) taking two apiece.
South Petherwin moved up to third after a 44-run success over visiting Newquay seconds at Kennards House.
Nick Gerry was the glue with 54 in a home total of 197-7, while there were useful contributions from Adrian Warne (27), Ian Clements (22), Taylor Gerry (20) and Paul Clements (16). Fifty-seven extras helped massively.
The Newquay chase got off to a great start through skipper Tommy Rodda (44) and Tom Rhodes (21).
But once Paul Clements had dismissed Rodda lbw, the middle order collapsed against the nagging swing of Clements (6-35) and Kevin Horrell (3-21).
Tail-enders John Tinson (22) and Joe Burton (18) set about repairing the damage, but in the end Newquay came up short.
Tintagel recorded a sixth straight win as they won by 80 runs at bottom club Launceston seconds, who were left cursing their inability to catch.
Tintagel’s top five all passed 20 but gave away chances which weren’t taken. Captain Jordan Burnard top-scored with 53 in their 223-9 while Ryan Pooley (43), Leo McDonnell (31), Ben Lane and Dan Jones (27) all got in.
Jake Barber (4-55) took four wickets while there were two apiece for Ethan Green and David Sillifant.
Any hope of a morale-boosting win were put to bed early on by James Ellis (3-34) and Jason Seldon (2-42) as Launceston’s top-order once again failed, losing four wickets inside 11 overs.
Barber made 21 at the top of the order before Darren Jenkin and Mark Forshaw hit out.
Although Jenkin (21) was bowled by Seldon, Forshaw continued to swing merrily, reaching his 50 after just 13 overs at the crease.
However, wickets fell regularly at the other end, including two in two balls from Pooley, as the end came in just the 28th over. Simon Fry (2-37) chipped in at the end.
Bude seconds also picked up seven points from their four-wicket defeat at home to their Callington counterparts at Crooklets.
Jack Miles’ 34 coupled with Anthony Greaves’ 18 and Mike Taylor’s unbeaten 19 helped the hosts recover from 86-6 to post 177-8.
Andrew Brenton took 2-24 off his 12 overs while youngster Ben Alford chipped in with 3-22 off seven.
The visitors went after the bowling from the off, reaching their target in the 28th over.
After Gary Moore (4-55) removed Brenton and Wayne Lock at 24-2, Toby May (57), Lee Cosgrove (29) and Harry Southcott (27) saw them over the line.
Both Roche and Bude have been deducted two points by the league for breaches of the code of conduct, meaning that just four points separate both clubs as well as Bude and Launceston in the race for survival.
The final round of fixtures in divisions four to six took place on Saturday with Werrington thirds securing promotion with a 66-run win at home to nine-man Duloe.
Toby Ward (32) and Nick Oldaker (31) both passed 30 in their 185-8, which proved far too many despite an excellent start from openers Chris Goldthorpe (42) and Ed Facey (20).
Simon Massey’s 35 from number four looked to set up an interesting finish, but once he and Goldthorpe went, spinner Tom Bailey (4-19) ran through the rest.
Having got 19 points, they needed Saltash St Stephens to get 17 points or less at Buckland Monachorum, and they managed just eight, losing by 65 runs, meaning Dan Jenkin’s men made an instant return to the fourth-tier for 2020.
Werrington look set to be runners-up after Bugle thrashed Luckett seconds by 125 runs.
Their 20 points means they need just one from their rearranged game with Lanhydrock seconds this weekend to take the title.
On Saturday, Paul Gribble’s 110 saw them reach 265-8. For Luckett, Martin Budge (4-46) and Steve Brown (2-55) were in the wickets.
Richard Seeley then made 53 in the reply, but it was the hosts who were celebrating promotion come the evening.
Delabole’s penultimate game in Division Four East saw them lose by seven wickets at home to Grampound Road thirds.
Glen Burrell top-scored with 79 in their 185-4 which also saw 41 not out from skipper Adrian Pooley and 20 apiece from Aaron Vercoe and Drew Burnard.
‘The Road’ were then led home by youngster Jamie Scatesveale who smashed 82 not out.
Delabole round off their season at home to Luckett on Saturday.
Gareth Clements’ 107 saw South Petherwin seconds end their Division Five East campaign end in fifth place with a three-wicket victory at St Neot twos.
Clements gave nine bowlers the chance to bowl before switching the batting order around.
Normally a middle-order player, Clements opened and smashed 16 fours and three sixes as they chased down 190 with 11 balls to go.
Milton Abbot’s penultimate game was over in exactly 25 overs as they bowled relegated St Erme seconds out for just 28 at Baxter Park.
The visitors arrived with just nine but could only last 18.3 overs as Clive Holding (4-6) and Nick Ireland (4-7) did the damage.
Paul Crocker (11no) and Richard Baxter (17no) then knocked the runs off in 6.3 overs.
St Minver rounded off their title-winning season by defeating Werrington fourths by 88 runs.
Jake Keast (90) and Luke Osborne (67) made half centuries in their 221-7. Ben Sonely picked up 4-45.
In reply, only Nigel Dennis (62) and James Turner (25no) passed 20 as they ended on 133-7. Nigel Hocking’s superb season continued with 3-23, making it 33 wickets for the season.
Tintagel seconds ended third after comfortably beating St Austell fourths by 81 runs at Butts Field.
Martin Seldon (42), Aaron Washer (41) and David Lane (36) all passed 30 in their 222-6, which the visitors were never going to get near after an early going over from Washer (2-22) and skipper David Lane (3-10 off ten).
Number nine William Apted’s unbeaten 48 delayed the end as St Austell were bowled out for 141.
Launceston finished in mid-table despite hammering bottom club St Stephen seconds by 157 runs.
Fourteen-year-old Ben Bryant top-scored with 84 and Lewis Matthews made 59 in their 256-8.
Will Harvey (4-25), Al Cartwright (2-12) and outgoing skipper Paul Bunn (2-2) were all in the wickets as the hosts were rolled over for 99.
Gunnislake rounded off their season by beating Boconnoc seconds by nine wickets at Deer Park.
Adam Emmerson smashed the Boconnoc bowling to all parts in his 120 not out as they chased 190.
