ECB Cornwall Premier League (Saturday)

Helston v Callington

CALLINGTON slipped to a first defeat in all competitions this season on Saturday as they were beaten by ten runs at Helston.

Cally’s four-pronged spin attack fought back brilliantly after Billy Taylor’s 66 got the hosts up to 113-1, with Liam Lindsay (2-21 off 10), Harry Sawyers (3-45 off 10) and Max Waller (2-36 off 9) all helping keep the Blues to 191-9.

Helston’s own four spinners then did similar, although it was seamer Ryan Tonkin (2-44) that did some early damage as they slipped to 102-6.

But a brilliant fightback led by James Brenton (31) got Cally towards the finishing line before the late drama.

Cally were on the back foot early on as openers Billy Taylor and Karl Leathley added 59 before the latter was lbw to Sawyers’ leg-spin for 24.

Taylor and South African Lance Alberts added a further 54 before Taylor went when he edged Waller behind to Joe White.

At 132-2, Helston were set for a score well in excess of 200, but then lost three wickets for seven runs.

Bits and pieces from the lower order got them up towards 200 with Mark Jenkin (13) and Charlie Hearn (15no) chipping in.

Cally lost Luke Brenton in the first over, and although eight of the batsmen got double figures, wickets fell regularly, including the big three of Lindsay (26), pro Graham Wagg and Waller (19).

Cally still had plenty of overs in the tank and youngster James Brenton (31) was joined by Toby May in a partnership of 40.

May fell a run later for 17 (143-8), run out by Alberts who took 2-22 from ten overs, but Cally were favourites again when White (17) and Ben Ellis added 36.

But White’s run out was soon followed by Steve Jenkin trapping Ellis (20) in front to end a thriller.

Wadebridge v Werrington

WERRINGTON won their third away game from four as they beat defending champions Wadebridge by 25 runs under the DLS method at Egloshayle Park.

Wadebridge chose to field and John Moon was lbw to James Turpin for just two, before Adam Hodgson (6) dragged on off county seamer Callum Wilson.

Sam Hockin, opening for the second successive week after his T20 heroics against Callington, was joined by Sri Lankan pro Thulina Dilshan, and they steadily took the score to 64-2 after 19 overs before they went off for rain at 2.18pm.

An early tea was taken, and play resumed at just before 4pm with the game now reduced to 38 overs.

Werrington upped the ante before Dilshan (54) skied a catch to James Turpin off Matt Rowe.

Mark Gribble then smashed 45 from just 29 balls in a knock that produced six fours and a six.

Hockin eventually perished for 72, bowled by Wilson who was superb for his 3-18 off eight overs.

Werrington lost a couple of late wickets, which meant once the calculations had been worked out, the target was 227 from 38 overs.

Former Werrington favourite Matt Robins edged Dan Barnard behind to Nick Lawson for a six-ball duck before South African Kevin Renecke gradually rebuilt the innings with Matt Rowe (24) who eventually skied a catch to Jordan Duke off Mark Taskis.

Renecke, who was twice reprieved, took 84 balls for his 58 before he was run out by Lawson following a fumble in the 26th over.

A shower then swept in following the wicket which meant Wadebridge required 56 from the final 4.3 overs.

Turpin (35) hit a six and a four to finish the 26th over, but Hodgson (1-15 off 5) trapped him lbw before the bowlers closed the game out as Wadebridge ended on 149-5.
