I’ve been continuing to fight for North Cornwall both in Westminster and here at home this week, where I also hit a major milestone: over 5,000 cases resolved for constituents! Thank you to everyone who has reached out to me for help with their cases, and if you need assistance or want to raise an issue, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via [email protected]
One of the biggest developments this week has been my continued push to make the A30 Plusha Junction safer. I had a constructive meeting with Roads and Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood MP, where I reiterated just how vital it is that we see urgent action at this deadly accident blackspot. I’ve been working very closely with local campaigners, councillors, and community groups so far to push for a grade-separated junction, and it’s promising that the Minister has now committed to raising Plusha’s upgrade options directly with National Highways as a priority. I also made clear that any changes must not simply divert the problem onto surrounding rural lanes. The Minister confirmed that she will ensure National Highways shares all its data and costings with Cornwall Council to prevent wasted money and duplicated work. We are making real progress, and I will keep pressing until the safety upgrades are delivered.
Access to GP services has been another major focus this week. In Bodmin, Bosvena Health is the only GP surgery in the town and is currently operating at an unsustainable 150% capacity. With over 3,000 new homes planned for Bodmin by 2030, the strain on primary care will only get worse unless proper investment is secured. I have since written to the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board (ICB) urging them to step in and break the deadlock over securing a new GP building. This situation has dragged on for far too long, and both doctors and patients are at breaking point. I also raised the issue of healthcare infrastructure directly with Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner in the Commons, and will keep doing so until we get the services that Bodmin desperately needs.
Back home in North Cornwall this week, I was thrilled to take part in a number of St Piran’s Day celebrations across the constituency with rousing renditions of Trelawney and lots of St Piran flags. After calling for St Piran’s Day to become a national bank holiday in Parliament last week, it was fantastic to see so many people out celebrating our unique Cornish culture. I spent the morning in Launceston with Cornish songs from local primary school children, and later in Bude with local councillor Nicky Chopak, Faye Emery and Kevin Colwill, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the fantastic performance from the brilliant Bencoolen Wreckers.
Elsewhere, I’ve been tackling local issues raised by residents, including blocked footpaths in Wadebridge. When I visited the Higher Trenant estate at the 'Cornish Quarter' with council candidate Rosie Moore a short while ago, I was shocked to see young children forced to walk on a busy road after a key pedestrian route was closed. After hearing from concerned parents, I’ve now written to Bovis Homes demanding a solution, and I will keep you all updated on this issue until it is resolved.
I also held another telephone surgery this week, providing a vital opportunity for constituents who may not be able to attend in-person appointments due to disability, transport issues, or rural isolation to speak directly with me about their concerns. Later in the week, I visited St Mawgan Primary School, where I pledged my assistance in helping them get an urgently needed new building. It was great hearing from the pupils what they would like in their new school including a canteen, a hall, more outdoor space and a staff room.
Finally, lots of you have contacted me about Ukraine and Gaza and so this week I urged the PM to seize frozen Russian assets to fund the defence of Ukraine and I called on the government to recognise the state of Palestine and push for aid to restart. That’s just a flavour of a very busy week - but I’m pleased to be making progress on so many core issues that affect us here in North Cornwall.
Again, as always, please do get in touch with my team and I if there’s ever anything I can help with.
