GOING down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland, the Holsworthy Rubies WI hosted an ‘Alice and Wonderland’ themed competition for this year’s show.

With some phenomenal entries, visitors to the show could see knitted rabbits, jam tarts and be as mad as the hatter as they viewed the creativity of WI groups from nearby areas.

Taking part were WI groups from Holsworthy, Bude, Week St Mary, Jacobstow, North Tamerton and Marhamchurch.

Each group could gain points from three sections. They were: Section one — fruit cordial, jam tarts, terrine or pate, sponge cake; Section two — child’s apron, tea cosy, table cloth, toy; Section three — top hat, photograph, playing cards, flowers.

Coming out on top, the judges awarded ‘Best Display’ to the Holsworthy group, all of whom seemed very pleased with this result. The judges’ comments were: ‘All the judges loved this display! Great use of colour — sometimes fewer colours can be better.’

Stealing the show were the Week St Mary WI with a win in two of the three awards given. They received ‘Most Points’ and ‘Best in Show’ for their creative Wonderland efforts. Within their display was a beautifully hand knitted ‘White Rabbit’ along with a meticulously decorated ‘Mad Hatters Hat’ and a whole range of other accompaniments that were well crafted and earned them the points.

The WI’s tent was a real hit with visitors this year, as it has been on many previous occasions. All displays really stuck to the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme and the competitors really got creative with it and showed off the skills each member of the individual WI groups possesses — it really was a wondrous sight to behold.

Congratulations were extended to the winning groups and many visitors left with a ‘Cheshire grin’ on their faces, eager to see what the WI will come up with next year to top this Wonderland display.
