WALKING from Holsworthy Library to Okehampton Library is no easy feat, but one employee has decided it is the perfect challenge to help raise vital funds for her local library.

Holsworthy Library supervisor Mary Weblin is planning to walk the 22 miles from the Holsworthy to Okehampton library on February 28 in order to raise money for Libraries Unlimited — the charity responsible for running Devon Libraries and Torbay Libraries.

Mary said: “I love walking but, this is a bit further than I usually venture, so I will definitely be challenging myself. I’m going to take a copy of a local history book about Holsworthy with me and donate it to Okehampton Library at the end of my walk.”

Mary won’t be taking on this trek alone however, her brother has kindly agreed to accompany her: “I’ll be walking with my brother and our route will take us along parts of both the Ruby Way and the Pegasus Trail. I particularly like walking in woodlands so am looking forward to the stretch that will take us through Cookworthy Forest.”

Mary has set up a ‘GoFundMe’ page in order to raise funds for Libraries Unlimited. She has already exceeded her initial target of £150 with the public donating an incredible £245 so far.

She said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated — it’s been very moving to see people donating and to talk to people about what the library service means to them. The support is really heartening. People wishing to donate can do so through our GoFundMe page or in person at Holsworthy Library.”

The money will be vital to helping continue the good work the library is already doing in the community: “Money raised will help Libraries Unlimited to continue delivering life changing library services. For example; £10 could buy and prepare a children’s book ready to find in your library, £15 could buy and prepare a large print book for the partially sighted, £100 could help pay for monthly heating and lighting costs for a smaller community library. All contributions, of whatever size, will make a difference and be very much appreciated.”

She added: “I see first hand the vital role that libraries play in the community and the difference they make to people’s lives. Libraries are a welcoming, inclusive space for all — from toddlers coming along to listen to songs and stories to adults accessing computers and IT support. As well as loads of fantastic books, we offer a range of digital services, events, clubs and much more.”
