Year 5 pupils from St Stephens Community Academy, alongside other pupils from all An Daras Trust schools came together for a lively and insightful forum focused on sustainability. The students had the chance to ask trust leaders important questions about how the schools and trust are reducing their carbon footprint and making eco-friendly choices.
The trust’s finance leader addressed questions on ensuring eco-friendly purchasing, explaining that the trust works with suppliers which prioritise sustainability and focuses on buying locally to reduce emissions. They also shared that the finance team is working towards clear sustainability goals.
The operations leader discussed the trust's efforts to reduce pollution with students. For example, implementing energy-efficient lighting and better managing food waste. They acknowledged that reducing pollution can be challenging but emphasised the importance of everyone’s participation in making lasting changes.
The resource leader highlighted new initiatives to cut down on waste, such as promoting reusable materials and exploring sustainable uniform options. Students were encouraged to come up with their own ideas for reducing waste, like using refillable water bottles and upcycling.
Following this, the trust’s curriculum leader spoke about how environmental topics are being integrated into lessons. They also shared the news that students will have a say in what they learn about regarding sustainability, in an effort to ensure their voices are heard in shaping the curriculum.
Following the event, the forum motioned a call for action: students, staff, and leaders are committed to working together to create a more sustainable future. The Year 5 pupils left the event excited and motivated, knowing they have an important role in making their schools — and the world — greener.
