A ROAD in Launceston is closed for emergency repairs after recent storms further decimated its surface.
The road surface of Castle Street, in Launceston, had become full of potholes after the recent Storm Bert catapulted rain and wind across Cornwall.
An emergency road closure has been put in place from November 27 until December 2.
While the road is closed, access will be maintained for emergency vehicles.
The site notice states: “The Cornwall Council hereby gives notice under Section 14 (2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 prohibiting the use by traffic over an area of highway being Castle Street, Launceston between the junctions with Tower Street and Church Street. The notice shall come into force on November 27 2024 for a period of up to 21 days, however, it is expected that the works will be completed by December 2 2024.”
The prohibition will be in force 24 hours a day, weekdays only.
“If the works cannot be completed during that period, the Council may issue a further notice under section 14(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or make a temporary Order under section 14(1) of that Act, so as to continue in force the provisions of this notice for a further period of time.
“It is necessary for the above restriction to come into force without delay because of emergency road surface repairs.
“The restrictions imposed by this notice shall remain in force on such days and during such times as the appropriate traffic signs are displayed. In this order "traffic sign" means a sign of any size, colour and type described or authorised under or having effect as though prescribed or authorised under section 64 of The Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
“While the Notice is in operation traffic, including bicycle movement, along the highway specified in paragraph one, will be temporarily restricted. No personnel, except upon the direction of a police constable in uniform, cause or permit any vehicle or pedal cycle to enter on, proceed or wait in the length of highway described above.
“An alternative route will be available for use while the notice is in force being Tower Street, Road From Tower Street To Castle Street, Castle Street, Church Street, High Street, Southgate Street, Madford Lane, Windmill Hill, Westgate Street, Dockey, Western Road, St Thomas Road, Wooda Lane, Wooda Road, Northgate Place, Tower Street.
“Pedestrian and Vehicular access to residents and businesses will be maintained.”
