The MP for North Cornwall has demanded action be taken by the government to solve the dangers of the Plusha junction on the A30.
Ben Maguire MP has demanded immediate action and focus to solve the issues surrounding the dangerous junction, where a number of serious road traffic collisions, some fatal, has taken place over the last two years.
Campaigners have called for solutions including a fly-over to take traffic crossing the A30 away from the junction, although no concrete plans have yet been announced.
After the latest fatal incident, temporary measures were put in place by Highways England including the restriction of entry to traffic crossing right across the short junction. A temporary speed reduction to 50 miles per hour has also been put in place for the section of road which crosses the junction.
Mr Maguire met with Transport Minister Simon Lightwood and explained how the junction has seen three fatalities already this year and we urgently need a funding commitment for a safe solution, such as a graded junction.
The Minister promised to take the matter forward and address the serious road safety issue with his ministerial colleagues.
Mr Maguire took the opportunity of meeting the Transport Minister to raise other pressing issues affecting his North Cornwall constituency. The Minister gave an undertaking to report back to the MP on the feasibility of the A39 Camelford by-pass.
The need for A39 changes was demonstrated earlier this summer when a narrow section of Fore Street, part of the A39 road, was closed following a building collapse and traffic diverted via a series of minor roads. Maguire also urged the minister to support rural bus networks and coaches in North Cornwall which have seen a series of routes cancelled.
After the meeting, Ben Maguire MP said: “I was pleased to be able to raise these concerns directly with the Government Minister, there is widespread concern locally about safety on the A30 at Plusha. If the Camelford by-pass is no longer going ahead we need to know so that we can work on other opportunities to inject investment into the town and help it thrive in the future.”
