ONLY one ward in Launceston will be on the ballot sheet this May after not enough candidates came forward to be elected.
Launceston Town Council comprises of two wards with a total of 16 seats - Launceston North and Launceston South with councillors representing the half of the town their ward reflects.
The council has confirmed that 13 people were nominated to contest the seats in the Launceston South ward of the council, meaning that electors will have the chance to vote for a councillor on May 1 alongside the election for a Cornwall Council member on the same day.
The four councillors who will be elected unopposed to Launceston Town Council, representing the Launceston North ward are: Paula Bullen (Independent), Sally Langston (Independent), Jamie Ranson and Margaret Young (Independent).
It sees three of the four Launceston North council members return for another term while Jamie Ranson is a new addition to the council, filling the seat of Cllr Jane Nancarrow who has not put herself forward for another term as a councillor after 11 years service.
In the Launceston South Ward, the 13 candidates standing for election in the 12 seats are as follows:
- Gregory Anston-Race (Liberal Democrats)
- Helen Bailey
- John Conway (Independent)
- Nicola Gilbert (Independent)
- Dave Gordon (Independent)
- Davey Green (Liberal Democrats)
- John Harris (Independent)
- Joan Heaton
- Brian Hogan (Retired Independent)
- Paul O’Brien (Independent)
- Bonnie Soanes (Liberal Democrats)
- Rob Tremain (Independent)
- Kevin Wadland
Five people put themselves forward to stand for the neighbouring St Stephens by Launceston Rural Parish Council.
Christopher Frost, Steven Goodenough, Christina Gunning, Joan Heaton and Jamie Ranson will fill five of the seats on the council, which has seven seats.
It means that the council will fill the two vacancies by co-option where those elected choose from a selection of people who put themselves forward as candidates after the new council term has commenced.
