ONE of the three wards which comprise Bude-Stratton Town Council will go to an election in May after not enough candidates were nominated in the other two, meaning that for those two areas, there is no need for a contested election.

Bude-Stratton Town Council comprises of 11 councillors in the Bude ward, six in the Stratton Ward and one serving the Hele Ward, a total of 17 councillors.

The council has confirmed that 12 people were nominated to contest the 11 seats in the Bude ward of the council, meaning that electors will have the chance to vote for a councillor on May 1 alongside the election for a Cornwall Council member on the same day.

In the Stratton ward, only three people came forward to stand for the six seats, meaning that they automatically become councillors with the remaining vacancies to be filled by the council using ‘co-option’; where the councillors choose the candidates from those who put themselves forward. The new council will be formed after the completion of the May local election and after this, the three seats to be filled by co-option will be advertised.

This means that Peter La Broy (Independent), Tom O’Sullivan (Independent) and Jeremy Petherick (Independent) will become councillors in the uncontested election for this ward.

In the Hele ward, only Tony Gibbs (Independent) put himself forward and fills the one vacancy.

The full list of candidates for the Bude ward are as follows:
