A VACANCY has arisen at a town council after the resignation of a councillor.

It has been confirmed that Councillor Pete Shepherd has resigned from Holsworthy Town Council.

It will now be up to the electorate on what happens next. If ten or more electors in the town write to Torridge District Council, the returning officers, requesting an election, one will take place otherwise it will be filled by co-option.

A spokesperson for Torridge District Council said: “Notice is hereby given that due to the resignation of Councillor Pete Shepherd a vacancy has arisen in the office of Town Councillor for the above Town. If by October 31, 2024 (14 election days after the date of this notice) a request for an election to fill the said vacancy is made in writing to the Returning Officer at the address below by ten electors for the said town, an election will be held to fill the said vacancy.

“The address of the Returning Officer is Torridge District Council, Riverbank House, Bideford, EX39 2QG. A request for an election can also be scanned and emailed to [email protected] and must contain a “wet ink” signature. If no such notice is given, the Town Council will fill the vacancy through co-option.”
