NORTH Cornwall hosted some of the area’s best, up and coming sporting talents this week, as St Joseph’s School in Launceston welcomed a number of schools for a day of netball competition.
On Wednesday, February 12, nine teams from nine schools from across Devon and Cornwall came together in Launceston to enjoy an under 11’s netball tournament.
Alongside the hosts, St Joseph’s School; Egloskerry Primary, St Stephen’s Academy, Bridestowe Primary, Shebbear College, Polwhele, King’s School, Tregadillett Primary, and Milton Abbot School all came to take part.
The day was blessed with glorious sunshine, creating an atmosphere full of energy, enthusiasm, and great sportsmanship. For many students taking part, this was their first experience of competitive netball, however, they embraced the challenge with determination, ready to try their best and have some fun along the way.

Donning their sports gear and bibs, teams took to the court ready to do themselves and their schools proud as they got stuck in to the competition.
Speaking about the day’s events, a spokesperson from St Joseph’s said: “The Year 5 and 6 teams showed remarkable progress throughout, with a stronger understanding of positions and rules. It was exciting to see how much the gameplay improved throughout the day, with players listening to advice and continuously developing their skills.”

Alongside the younger pupils taking part in the competition, there were a number of older students helping to referee, guide pupils and organise the tournament.
The spokesperson continued: “A special thank you goes to the eight St Joseph’s Year 10 student umpires who officiated the matches. Their confidence and encouragement played a huge role in ensuring a supportive and enjoyable experience for all the young players.
“Well done to everyone involved – your effort and sportsmanship were exceptional!”
