A BUDE-based music charity has showcased some of the best local talent at its recent competition.
Sound Waves South West (SWSW) recently hosted its 2024 prize giving ceremony. The event rewards those who have put on the best musical performance.
Crowds gathered at Morwenstow Community Centre to receive their prizes and enjoy performances by some of the winners.
The youngest nominee, William Spencer Wortley, opened the evening playing the trombone and singing two songs.
Finnely Brett, the runner-up, played two pieces on the keyboard — the second of which was his own composition. Octavia Meakin-Lee was this year's winner. She began by playing a piece on the flute, followed by a short recital on the piano.
A spokesperson from the charity said: “Octavia is an exceptionally talented pianist and reached Grade 8 after only four years — much of which was self-taught. It is a pity we were unable to provide a grand piano for her performance but everyone was enthralled by her playing on a keyboard.”
The event was in memory of former member Jill Wellby.
They added: “We all miss Jill Wellby who contributed so much to SWSW and we would like to thank Richard Wellby and family for donating the funds from Jill’s funeral towards the prize money.”
