NORTH Cornwall’s MP has spoken in Parliament, urging the government to address urgent road safety issues on Cornwall’s A30.
Ben Maguire, the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Cornwall has addressed pariliament regarding the safety of one of the most infamous A30 black spots in the area, Plusha Junction.
The site has been the focus of much discussion of late, after National Highways released its plans to improve the safety of a number of junctions along the road.
Residents and councillors have been asking for change due to the high rate of crashes, many of which are life-changing or fatal.
Asking a question to the Leader of the House, Lucy Powell, Mr Maguire highlighted the critical need for collaboration between National Highways and the government to deliver essential infrastructure projects to make Cornwall’s roads safer.
Ben Maguire MP asked: “Given the longstanding community concerns in my constituency of North Cornwall about road safety issues and the extremely high rate of fatalities on the A30 at the Plusha Junction, and the need for a graded junction at that location, can we have a debate in Government time on how National Highways and the Government can better work together to deliver critical infrastructure projects to reduce accidents and fatalities on our busy A roads?”
In response, the Leader of the House, Lucy Powell, promised updates on an upcoming strategic framework for road safety: “We did announce yesterday some additional funds for road and other infrastructure which I think will play an important part, and we will also be delivering an updated strategic framework for road safety very shortly, and I will make sure that Ministers come to this House regularly to report on that.”
Commenting after his question in the House, Ben Maguire MP said:
“I will be fighting North Cornwall’s corner to ensure we get our fair of the funding for roads announced in the budget. We are sick and tired of transport investment in the North and South East, while Cornwall gets overlooked entirely. This junction upgrade is not just a nice thing to have but essential to save lives.”
