A LOCAL student has displayed heartfelt generosity after donating a full trolley of food to those in need.

Last year, Windmill Hill Academy in Launceston hosted its annual summer fayre, welcoming residents to enjoy a variety of stalls and stands.

As part of the event James, a Year 5 pupil (now in Year 6) took the lead in making and selling plushies, joined by a group of his friends who also helped him.

Following his efforts, with all the money he had raised, James made the decision that he wanted to kindly donate the proceeds to help purchase items for the school’s community larder.

The larder was established by students back in 2023, with the aim of supporting local families and members of the community who may be in need - free of charge.

With his self-raised funds in hand, James carefully planned which items he would be purchasing for the larder. With his list in hand, and having decided which supermarket to go to, the group ventured to Lidl and collectively chose the items that they would like to purchase, making sure they managed to keep within their budget.

The group purchased a variety of non-perishable items, including tinned foods such as rice pudding, beans and fruit, as well as pasta, rice and noodles.

Following their trip to the shops, all items were placed in the community larder at the front of school, located on Shilson Terrace, along Windmill Hill.

Mrs Bassett, headteacher at the school, said: “Please remember that members of our school and community are well to take (and put in) items into our community larder. We hope that it will help to support people who may be struggling and to avoid waste.

“What a very generous and thoughtful act of kindness!”
